Its an exciting time here, as construction is well along with our new Dorrance Fan House Building at No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford, PA. The new Dorrance Fan House will house the last two remaining giant mine fans surviving in the PA Anthracite Region. They were saved from the cutters torch near Wilkes Barre as part of a joint state, federal project with No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum. The 1883 Fan and 1905 fans along with their original stationery steam engines were moved to No. 9 as part of this historic preservation project where they are being restored and exhibited in this new Dorrance Fan House. The new structure is 100 feet wide, 80 feet deep, and 4 stories high to accommodate the giant mine fans and steam engines. The largest fan dating to 1883 is 35 foot in diameter. The 1905 mine fan is approximately 30 foot in diameter. Both were used to circulate huge volumes of fresh air through the Dorrance Colliery Mine near Wilkes Barre. The Dorrance Fans and Fan House project will be completed this year and become another amazing piece of coal mining history only to be found at and enjoyed by visitors to No.9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford, PA.

The restoration of the original No. 9 Mine Powder (explosives) Storage House and surrounding grounds continues with the arrival and placement of an explosives car on display like were commonly used for transporting explosives in to the mine safely. Employees and equipment from Lehigh Anthracite and Boyle Electro Mechanical facilitated moving the car from nearby Coaldale to its new home displayed in front of the No. 9 Mine Powder House. Many thanks to both firms for all their help. The next step is to pressure wash the roof and walls of the Powder House and painting of the thick, reinforced concrete walls. The dirt embankment around the Powder House was to help contain the force of any accidental explosions that might occur inside the Powder House. This is one of the many fascinating pieces of mining history to be seen by visitors to the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford, PA located in Carbon County, PA.
