Often you are your own worst critic and very hard on yourself. You spend most of your day hearing negative things about yourself from inmates or even coworkers and may even come home to hear complaints from your family about your behavior or not being around due to mandates. You’re getting judged and criticized from all sides. You need to balance the negative with the things about yourself you have to be grateful for. I encourage you to do these check ins daily.

It's hard to find things to be grateful for when you work in such a toxic environment so start with being grateful for what did NOT happen rather than what did. Like NOT getting stabbed or mandated or having to work with a bad partner or respond to a serious incident. There's always something positive, some light in the dark, if you take the time to focus on that instead of all the s**t around you.

It’s hard to find reasons to appreciate your job but shifting your focus from the negative to gratitude shifts your energy, boosts your mood and allows you raise your middle finger to the prison while you show the system it will not control you or your life. You will find joy in spite of them.
