Trauma work involves deep introspection. It often feels worse for the short term before it feels better. When the wounds of trauma are healed, the long term gain is a wiser, more resilient YOU.

It’s a choice and trauma can act as a block to seeing all the possibilities. Trauma clouds judgement and causes people to act impulsively and from a place of fear. When you are far enough in your healing journey that you become aware of the differences between the healthy and the unhealthy connections in your life. You will have the ability to make better choices.

How often do you find yourself wishing for something you don’t have or feeling envious of someone else’s good fortune or success? If we stay there in that place of wanting or envy, we can easily lose sight of what we already have. Taking the time to notice and even revel in what is leads to feelings of fulfillment, happiness and contentment.

In the military, we trained to carry heavy weight. Rucks. Armor. Weapons.
But out here?
We’re carrying something heavier; guilt, grief, anger, shame.
And we carry it alone.
We don’t drop the ruck. We don’t ask for help. We just keep moving… until our knees buckle and we call it “weakness.”
But hear this:
You’re not weak, you’re overloaded.
And even in the service, you weren’t meant to carry it all alone. We had squads. Teams. Battle buddies.
Out here, you still need them.
Unload something this week. Talk to a brother. Call your therapist. Write it down. Take off the ruck.
You earned rest. You earned healing.
If you’re in crisis, call or text 988 day or night.

Burnout and vicarious trauma are 2 potential side effects of chronic stress and overwhelm. Those in the helping professions experience this at high rates. In providing trauma informed care to others, it is important to take care of yourself. Putting on the oxygen mask first before tending to others is not selfish it is self preservation. Learn to tend to your own needs so you can continue to support others.
