Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence Launches Public Phase of Capital Campaign to Meet Growing a Need for Residential Hospice Care
The Building on Our Promise campaign aims to raise $3 million to expand Stoneleigh Residence and provide more families with comfort, dignity and compassionate care.
LANSING, Mich. — Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence announced today the launch of the public phase of its Building on Our Promise capital campaign — a visionary effort to raise $3 million to expand and modernize the cherished Stoneleigh Residence in response to growing community need. As the region’s only independent, nonprofit, community-based licensed hospice residence, Stoneleigh Residence holds a unique place in mid-Michigan’s continuum of care.
During the campaign’s quiet phase, community leaders, generous donors and local foundations have already raised $2.2 million — more than half of the campaign’s $3 million goal. Their early support is a powerful testament to the vital role Stoneleigh Residence plays in offering peace, dignity and compassionate care during life’s most delicate moments in the Mid-Michigan region. Thanks to this strong early response, Hospice of Lansing anticipates breaking ground on the expansion this spring.
This expression of community support reflects both the urgent need for expanded hospice care and the deep trust families place in Stoneleigh Residence. That trust is affirmed by a 5-star rating — the highest possible — on Medicare’s Care Compare system, based on post-care family surveys. Stoneleigh is the only Lansing-based hospice to earn this distinction, highlighting the exceptional compassion and support it provides.
“Each year, more than 100 families are turned away simply because we don’t have enough space,” said Kate Moss, campaign co-chair and president of the Board of Directors for Hospice of Lansing. “With our state’s aging population and a shortage of licensed inpatient hospice beds in the region, this expansion isn’t just timely — it’s absolutely essential.”
With the public phase underway, Hospice of Lansing seeks to raise the remaining funds needed to complete Phase Two of its campaign — an expansion of the Stoneleigh Residence from eight to 12 fully-furnished hospice suites, alongside a new meditation room and upgrades to infrastructure.
The planned 6,034 square foot expansion will increase the residence’s capacity by 50% and introduce modernized spaces designed to better support both families and staff.
“We’re honored to now welcome the entire community to be part of this meaningful journey,” said Penny (Davis) Spehar, campaign co-chair. “Ten years ago, when my husband and our family needed Stoneleigh, it gave us peace, comfort and the space to just be together. Since then, the need for this kind of care has only grown. Expanding Stoneleigh’s reach means more families can walk this journey surrounded by the same grace and support that carried us.”
Campaign Highlights:
• Expanding capacity by 50% — adding four new fully furnished suites to serve more families in moments that matter most.
• Advanced, patient-centered upgrades — refreshed interiors, infrastructure improvements and serene new reflection spaces designed for both comfort and peace.
• New family and staff spaces — including a meditation room, community conference space and additional work areas to support growing care teams.
• Smart investment, lasting impact — Phase One consolidation has already saved thousands in monthly overhead, paving the way for sustainable growth.
• Backed by community champions — early funding from The Dart Foundation, Capital Region Community Foundation, Jackson National Life Insurance Company, local donors and Hospice of Lansing’s own reserves.
• Built by local hands, for local families — partnering with Custom Built Design & Remodel and area professionals to ensure high-quality, community-driven design.
“Stoneleigh is more than a building; it’s a promise of comfort and dignity when families need it most,” said Heather Vida, executive director of Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence. “This expansion reflects our commitment to meeting our community’s growing needs, while preserving the warmth and compassion that have always defined our care.”
As Stoneleigh Residence celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026 — and Hospice of Lansing marks over 46 years of compassionate service — Building on Our Promise stands as a bold investment in the future of hospice care. This campaign is more than a building project; it’s a reflection of a community’s shared commitment to dignity, comfort and connection at life’s most deeply personal moments.
