MOA Advocates at the Capitol

On April 29, forty-six optometrists and students from across Michigan—from the Upper Peninsula to Detroit—gathered in Lansing for the Michigan Optometric Association’s Day at the Capitol. Their goal: to speak directly with lawmakers about the critical role optometrists play in the healthcare system and the need for legislation that reflects modern eye care.

In meetings with 29 State Representatives and 10 Senators, advocates emphasized patient safety, the dangers of online contact lens renewals, and the need to update Michigan’s scope of practice to match other states.

The day also included a policy briefing and a special lunch with Rep. Curt VanderWall, Chair of the House Health Policy Committee.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped move the profession—and patient care—forward!

Tariffs impact optometry practices and the delivery of essential eye health and vision care. The AOA will maintain a continuous dialogue regarding tariff policy with White House and Federal agency officials and Members of Congress and will advise policy makers regarding any potential areas of harm to patients, doctors, critical medical device, equipment and related supply chains and the overall health care delivery system. Doctors with questions or concerns about incoming tariff-related communications they’re receiving from health plans and vision benefit managers (VBMs), manufacturers, suppliers and vendors are asked to contact AOA’s President, Dr. Steven Reed, at President@AOA.org.

The MOA, along with the MFVA, Michigan College of Optometry, and University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry participated in the 2025 Michigan HOSA State Leadership Conference to support middle and high school students aiming to become future health professionals. This included an exhibit showcasing careers in Optometry and vision care. Over 3,000 students participated in this event!
