LANSING BRIDGE TO CLOSE OCTOBER 15, 2025 - A few news sources are reporting via Iowa DOT Highway Division Administrator Tony Gustafson that a date is set for closing the Black Hawk Bridge this fall. “When the bridge is closed on October 15th, they’ll begin demolition immediately on the existing bridge — removing the deck panels manually, but also using dynamite to demo the bridge,” he says. In the meantime, work is continuing that caused the old bridge to move (at its underwater foundation) in the past, he said. He told the Iowa Transportation Commission they have an updated schedule for opening the NEW bridge, trying to open it to one-lane traffic in March of 2027. The steel truss members of the bridge need to be painted twice with a special paint. One lane of traffic will be open while they paint the other side, and then switch the open traffic lane to paint the other side.
CASSVILLE CAR FERRY RUMORED TO BE USED AFTER FALL BRIDGE CLOSING - If that ferry service for crossing the Mississippi River between Lansing and Wisconsin is put into use, a couple things to consider: It may be an "on-demand service" where the ferry operates on a push-button system, meaning it departs when signaled at either landing. Also, the ferry will have limited capacity. The deck can reportedly hold less than a dozen cars at a time.

We want to update you on a revised plan for the existing Mississippi River Bridge. After extensive engineering analysis and talks between Iowa and Wisconsin DOTs and the contractor, we've determined that future construction stages on the new bridge could pose a safety risk to the existing bridge.

So, this fall (2025) crews will close and demolish it so we can safely continue our work and meet the deadline for the 2027 opening of the new bridge.

The safety of all of you, the construction workers, rail traffic, and Mississippi River traffic is our #1 concern. Our teams are working on alternative river crossings to help everyone make this transition.

We'll announce the exact closure date later in the year, but here are the details at this point. Thank you for your support and understanding!

News release about Iowa DOT Providing Free Water Taxi Service as Lansing Bridge Remains Closed.

05/28/2025

We want to update you on what is happening as we move forward with the inspection of the Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing.
On May 17th, sensors on the bridge detected movement on one of the piers. That prompted us to close the bridge out of safety concerns.
Since then, our engineering firm, WJE, completed a thorough inspection of the bridge, including working through the holiday weekend, and they are currently analyzing the results. We should have their findings by late Friday to help us decide what is next.
In the meantime, we are moving forward on getting a free water taxi service running again. As you can see in the picture, the dock for the service was installed by our maintenance staff at the Big Slough Landing today.
We will have more information on the water taxi, including when the service will start and the schedule, by early next week.
Thank you again to all who use the bridge for your patience and understanding as we determine the next step to safely get you across the Mississippi River.

Iowa 9/WIS 82 Mississippi River Bridge to Remain Closed Through Memorial Day Weekend

MASON CITY, Iowa – May 22, 2025 – Motorists hoping to use the Iowa 9/WIS 82 Mississippi River bridge between Lansing, Iowa, and Crawford County, Wisconsin, will need to continue to make alternate plans for the Memorial Day weekend. Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) officials confirmed today that the bridge will remain closed due to safety concerns through the Memorial Day weekend.

The Iowa DOT District 2 office closed the bridge on Saturday, May 17, when sensors detected movement exceeding safety thresholds. Follow-up surveys confirmed the movement, and engineering teams are continuing to monitor and inspect the bridge to analyze safety and determine what’s needed to repair the bridge. However, a plan for any fix has not yet been finalized and there is no re-opening date set.

Both Iowa DOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) recommend that motorists use the nearest bridges at La Crescent, Minnesota/Lacrosse, Wisconsin, or Marquette, Iowa/Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin to cross the Mississippi River during this closure. The bridge will not be open to vehicle traffic for Memorial Day Weekend, but the river channel below the bridge remains open.

Work on the new bridge is moving forward. For more information on the construction of the new Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing, go to iowadot.gov/lansingbridge and sign up to receive updates directly to your inbox or check out our page Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing
