There are three parts to newborn screening: blood spot, hearing and heart screening which are performed in the hospital or by community birthing attendants for home or community births. Blood spot screening results take a few days to come back, ask your child’s primary care provider for the results of this test. Screening for hearing loss and critical congenital heart disease, also called “point of care” screens, are performed in the hospital or by midwives attending home births, and you can ask for your child’s results immediately after the test is performed.

Routine vaccines are safe, and they protect kids from dangerous diseases. Making sure kids are up to date on school vaccines helps keep the whole community safe, including kids who can’t be vaccinated and older adults.

Children in Michigan can get vaccinated through health care providers, local health departments, and many pharmacies.

This Labor Day Remember: Go Slow. Never Use Alone. Carry Naloxone.

Although overdose deaths in Michigan have declined, many in our community still struggle with substance use. Naloxone is a safe and effective tool that can prevent a fatal opioid overdose. Having it on hand means you can be ready to save a life.

Remember: fentanyl test strips, naloxone, and other harm reduction tools don’t encourage drug use, they help protect health and keep our communities safer!

Want to carry naloxone and be prepared? Find free resources here: https://health.ingham.org/health/health_promotion_and_prevention/naloxone.php
