Michiganders made their voices clear when they voted for Prop 3 in 2022, enshrining the right to reproductive freedom in our state constitution. But as former PPMI board member Cynthia Ford said in a recent op-ed, “a right… only matters if people can actually use it, and a constitutional guarantee means nothing to a patient who cannot get an appointment, cannot afford the visit, or cannot drive three hours to the nearest clinic.”

Because of the Trump administration's relentless attacks on Planned Parenthood, the gap between a right and access is growing, and it requires immediate action. We need our state leaders to act now to fix the mess Congress created, and protect the reproductive freedom we fought so hard for, before it's too late.

When Mallory needed care, Planned Parenthood was there with the compassionate support she deserved, every step of the way. 🩷

But right now, the Trump administration's relentless attacks on Planned Parenthood are putting access to essential sexual and reproductive health care at risk by cutting hundreds of millions of dollars in reimbursements for care provided at Planned Parenthood health centers nationwide — including here in Michigan. If PPMI is left without the resources to provide care to people who can't afford it, many Michiganders will be forced to go without essential, life-saving care altogether.

Other states have already acted to stabilize funding for providers. Michigan can do the same, but we need state leaders to act now to fix the problem Congress created, before it's too late. Here in Michigan, we have done everything we can to continue serving everyone who relies on Planned Parenthood, but we can’t continue this fight alone.

If state leaders don’t act now to fix the problem Congress created, Planned Parenthood patients in Michigan will pay the price. Health centers will close, making it harder for people to get the care they need or forcing them to go without essential, life-saving care altogether.

When someone who has sat at the table where budget decisions get made says the tools exist, and the question is whether leaders will act, it’s worth paying attention.

In a new op-ed, Planned Parenthood of Michigan Board Member and former Congressman Mark Schauer breaks down what’s at stake for reproductive health care in Michigan. With tens of thousands of patients relying on PPMI for Title X services and a growing funding gap, access to essential care like birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment is on the line for communities across the state.

Michigan has positioned itself as a national leader on reproductive freedom, and we are grateful to the voters and legislative champions who have fought alongside us to get here. But the freedoms we have fought for only hold if access to the care behind them is still standing. We need more of Michigan's leaders to join other states in using their administrative authority and legislative action to stabilize this essential care.
