Today is Trans Day of Visibility. We lift up our community members who are transgender and non-binary. What does it mean to be transgender and non-binary?
🏳️‍⚧Transgender describes people whose gender identity differs from the s*x they were assigned at birth.
🏳️‍⚧A non-binary person has a gender identity or expression that does not fit the gender they were assigned at birth and doesn't always fit neatly into the concept of a "male" or "female" identity. For example, one could identify as being "somewhere in the middle," not identify with a gender at all, or feel as though their identity is fluid or ever-changing.
🏳️‍⚧Gender is a social construct – meaning it is totally made up! Each of us may have been put into a blue or pink onesie at birth, but we strive for a world where we can freely choose what fits best: masculine, feminine, and everything in between and beyond.
🏳️‍⚧ Human Rights Campaign recorded over 130 anti-transgender bills added to the legislative landscape of the United States this year. In 2020, our country also saw the highest number of fatalities in a single year for the transgender community. The violence disproportionately impacted Black transgender women.

What can you do to better support your trans and non-binary neighbors?
🏳️‍⚧Ask, “What are your pronouns?” and respect them
🏳️‍⚧Educate yourself on gender identity
🏳️‍⚧Speak out against anti-trans behavior

Image description: A trans pride flag is draped over the background of a blue sky. A trans pride flag is light blue with a pink horizontal stripe and a white stripe in the middle. A pink paint stroke says, “Today is Trans Day of Visibility.” Our Disability Network Capital Area logo appears at bottom left in a white square with our organization name in blue and orange, encircled in blue.
