The ripple effects of fall 2025’s historic, 43-day federal government shutdown deeply impacted households throughout mid-Michigan. From missed federal paychecks and contract payments to disruptions in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — for the first time ever during a shutdown — its impact persists, even after the government reopened in mid-November.

Yet in this moment of crisis, small businesses across mid-Michigan responded — not just as businesses, but as neighbors.

This Small Business Saturday, keep these and other local gems in mind as you do your holiday shopping. Local businesses can step up in times of need for our community because it is their community, too — their efforts are neighbors helping neighbors, not efforts to feed a bottom line.
