It is natural to feel unsure about what to say when someone loses a loved one. The most comforting messages are often the ones spoken from the heart. Simple words like “I care about you,” “I am thinking of you,” and “I am here whenever you need me” can bring gentle reassurance and peace.

Compassion, presence, and kindness remind grieving families that they are supported, cared for, and surrounded by love during a time when comfort matters most.

All across our neighborhoods, people are entering the new year with hearts that are both tender and strong. Some are grieving quietly. Some are honoring loved ones. Some are finding moments of light again. Some are simply surviving. Every one of those experiences deserves compassion.

As we move into a new year, please remember:
You are allowed to feel what you feel.
You are allowed to take space.
You are allowed to continue healing at your own pace.

Our Lansing community is filled with hearts just like yours, and you are never alone.

Among the many ways to honor a departed loved one, serving as a pallbearer holds a special significance. It is more than a role at a funeral service. It is a meaningful privilege that allows close friends and family members to take part in a loved one’s final journey.

For many, carrying the casket is an expression of respect, gratitude and love. It offers a tangible way to say farewell and to support one another during a deeply emotional moment. Whether chosen for their closeness, their connection or their shared history, pallbearers play an important part in a family’s healing.

Deciding whether a child should attend a funeral is a personal choice. Parents and guardians know their child best, and factors such as age, maturity, relationship to the person who died, and prior experiences with loss can help guide the decision.

If a child will be attending a service, preparation can make the experience more supportive and less overwhelming. Explain what will happen in simple, age-appropriate language. Share what the funeral means to your family, whether it reflects spiritual beliefs, cultural traditions, or a meaningful way to say goodbye.

Reassure your child that any emotion they feel is welcome. Sadness, quietness, confusion, and curiosity are all natural responses. Let them know you will be by their side throughout the service.

If you have questions about helping a child navigate a funeral, our team is here to support you.

The holidays may bring more than festive lights this year. They can also stir up unexpected memories, emotions, or grief when someone you love is no longer here.
If this feels familiar, please know that you are seen, you are not alone and it is completely okay to move through this season in your own way.

When loss or trauma touches our lives, familiar celebrations can feel heavier, joy can feel farther away and traditions can bring both comfort and pain. The holidays often look different after loss, and that is a natural part of healing.

Here are some gentle thoughts to carry with you this season:

It is okay to step away from the idea of a “perfect holiday.” Not every moment has to match how things used to be.
Traditions that once brought comfort may now feel difficult. You have full permission to change them or create new ones that honor the person you miss.
Your feelings matter. Grief may rise at unexpected times. A song, a decoration or a memory can all bring emotion to the surface. Be kind to yourself as these moments come.
Healing does not mean forgetting. Meaning and comfort can return slowly, in a way that allows love and memory to be part of your present.
