The AAP has released a call to action regarding SNAP benefits.

SNAP is a children's health program. In fact, SNAP helps to feed about 16 million children - making up about 40% of the program's participants. Studies show that SNAP participation reduces food insecurity by as much as 30 percent and is even more effective among children and those facing very low food security.

The Academy has been advocating with Congress and the Administration and working closely with its state chapters to push for continued SNAP benefits during the government shutdown.

Now is the time for lawmakers to hear from you. Tell your lawmakers why SNAP is vital to children in your state, and that benefits must be provided in November. AAP members can find talking points on AAP's website after logging in.

"This further builds the case that cannabis use in adolescence adversely affects the [health] trajectories of those who use it," says psychiatrist Dr. Ryan Sultan at Columbia University, who wasn't involved in the new research.

Young teens who use cannabis are more likely to be frequent users than people who start later, according to a study in JAMA Network Open. They are also more likely to seek care for health problems.

On the far east side of Michigan, the future of fluoride in drinking water — long an ordinary practice for preventing tooth decay — has suddenly provoked passionate debate.

After decades of fluoridating drinking water to improve public health, some communities are wavering on the practice. In one Michigan county, the medical director is mirroring Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s efforts against fluoridation.

🎙️ MIAAP member Dr. Nikki Hamp recently spoke with FOX 17 about the devastating cut to the Autism Alliance of Michigan’s MiNavigator program in the state budget.

Dr. Hamp highlighted the essential role MiNavigator plays in supporting families and children with autism across Michigan — and the widespread impact this funding loss could have on access to care and coordination of services.

The organization planned on receiving around $2 million from the state, an allocation that would have covered half of its annual budget and "almost 100%" of the cost of its MiNavigator program.
