“Allowing the government to determine which patient groups deserve care sets a dangerous precedent, and children and families will bear the consequences,” said Dr. Susan Kressly, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other health officials said Thursday that the federal government will block hospitals and doctors from providing transgender care to children, saying, “this is not medicine, it is malpractice.”

We are deeply disappointed by today’s ACIP vote to downgrade long-standing, evidence-based recommendations that protect infants from hepatitis B. Decisions of this magnitude carry consequences that extend far beyond present-day practice; they shape the health, trust, and wellbeing of future generations. As pediatricians, we have always centered our care on the science that safeguards our most vulnerable patients—children of every age—and we remain steadfast in that commitment.

Pediatricians are no strangers to hard questions. We welcome rigorous debate when it is rooted in emerging evidence or new concerns. Yet no such evidence has been presented to justify this change. Expressing our disappointment is not a reaction to discomfort, but a response grounded firmly in the absence of any data that would warrant weakening a recommendation that has saved countless lives.

We also recognize that moments like today can fuel fear, distrust, and confusion among families. While these consequences are harmful, they will not deter us from practicing the science-based, patient-centered care that has always defined our profession. MIAAP is proud to stand firm alongside the American Academy of Pediatrics as they continue to recommend hepatitis B vaccination at birth for all newborns.

Our Chapter remains committed to supporting pediatricians and all clinicians who work closely with families to navigate uncertainty and uphold the health of their children. Despite the upheaval that may follow this decision, one truth remains constant: our unwavering dedication to our patients and our enduring passion to advocate for their health and wellbeing.
