Something I hear from time to time that isn't talked about often when preparing for baby is how your pets will handle the big change. Until your first baby arrives, for many people, our fur babies occupy (or demand!) our full attention. So how do you prepare your pets and help ease the transtion?
>>Make a plan for their care, especaially thre first few weeks with baby! Babies are notorious for arriving in the middle of the night, or weeks earlier or later than exptected. Have your plan in place at least a month before baby's due date.
>>Practice changes to your daily routine ahead of time. If your long walk of the day will be changing to 12pm vs 7am, start slowly transtitiong to the new time now.
>>Start enforcing rules surrounding the baby now. If your dog will not be allowed in baby's room after their birth, make sure you enforce that rule before as well!
>>Introduce your pet to baby items around the house and the scent of the baby before introducing the actual baby. If your partner or a family member stops in to check on your pets while you are still at the hospital, allow them to bring home a hat or blanket with the baby's scent on it to sniff, so the scent is mroe recognized when baby comes home.
