Apothecary & Co was founded in 2018 by Dr. Hillary Howell, PharmD.

After many years as a retail pharmacy manager—and following her husband’s journey with a rare, aggressive cancer—Hillary felt called to do pharmacy differently. More time. More listening. More connection.

She opened Apothecary & Co as a self-pay pharmacy, which at the time felt like a big risk—especially in Michigan, where many families are used to great insurance through the auto industry. People thought she was a little kooky dooks. 😉

But slowly, the business grew—along with Hillary’s passion to help people truly understand their health.

Along the way, she deepened her training:
🌿 Herbalist certification through Rosemary Gladstar
🧠 Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN)
🔬 Ongoing training through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFMCP)

Today, Hillary loves sitting with people, helping them connect the dots on their health journey—without ego, without rushing, and without one-size-fits-all answers.

I was so excited to attend another truly astounding birth yesterday. I watched a little boy become a big brother, a roll he assumed immediately. I witnessed a family of 3 become a family of 4 in a matter of hours. My favorite way to spend a day.

What a triumphant birth and a heroic mama! This family is a blessing to work with, and as a repeat client, they courageously rang in the new year with the first baby of 2026. I am confident this little champion is destined to win biggest baby of 2026! I am deeply honored to be part of this miraculous journey, working with his amazing parents through labor and beyond. The unwavering strength, unshakeable grace, and unrelenting determination I witnessed are truly unforgettable.

"When I tried to lay down after lunch I was vocalizing through every contraction and sleep was thrown out the window yet again. This concerned me because my labor had been so long with my first and I was still getting over a cold as well so in my head I thought, well that is already two things marked against me. I hadn’t texted Alex an update in a few hours and Jake told me I should because he thought things were moving quickly. I wasn’t so sure but I contacted her and she said she would check on me, come set up the birth pool and leave if it wasn’t time yet. My Dad then came and picked up my son and a half an hour later Alex arrived. She checked me and smiled when she told me I was complete. She said she would try to get the birth pool set up but wasn’t sure if she had enough time. In my head I thought that we had all the time in the world because I just couldn’t believe that my baby could possibly be here so quickly."

On January 12th I woke up at 7:45 and felt some cramping in my stomach. I ate a whole pint of ice cream the night before so I thought that I might have a stomach ache. I laid there for a few minutes to see if I could tell if they were contractions or not and determined that yes, I was in early labor...

2025 was a year of incredible growth, I'm thrilled to have walked with more families than ever before! As I set my sights on 2026, I'm dreaming big and I need some of you amazing mamas to plan some November due dates for me - after all, I've had the privilege of guiding 3 November clients over the past 4.5 years, lets double that this year!

I'm overflowing with gratitude for my rockstar clients, my supportive husband who's always understanding of my on-call lifestyle, and my incredible Sol Midwifery team, including our talented lactation support, birth assistant, and phenomenal chiropractors in the area. Cheers to a New Year my friends.

Last week, Gretchen and I had so much fun attending the births of two nearly Christmas babies!

The first birth we attended was for a family I've sat beside for three births now, what a blessing. I am in awe as I continue to watch them grow and learn together as a family. Truly, it's an honor to hold this space for them.

The second birth we attended was for a family new to the area, but not new to home birth. This mama labored like a champion with the cheering support of her curious little toddler.

What a beautiful Sunday! I was blessed enough to witness a truly beautiful 2HBA2C (good luck figuring that one out 😉). This mama truly did such an amazing job bringing her baby girl into the world and I was so honored to be there.

Speaking of blessings, this family took creating their ideal birth team incredibly seriously! Working with these ladies last night was such a joy.

I have fallen off of the social media world, but don't worry, I'm back! I am sad about all of the birth announcements I missed over the last several months but can't wait to get back on the train and celebrate with the beautiful families I get to work with.

In a sprint of a labor, an expert mama but first time home birther welcomed her little boy. Thankfully and I beat him to the party, but only with enough time to get into the house. It was such a blessing to walk this path with this family.
