Have you struggled to get your loved one to shower?
Bathing can be a constant struggle for so many caregivers of seniors with Alzheimer's or other cognitive impairments.
It's important to keep your older adults body clean to prevent skin infections, to avoid unpleasant body odors and to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections.
But, at times, trying to get them to shower can result in arguments, crying and hostility. So what can you down someone with dementia refuses to shower?
Establish a daily routine. As I've said before, structure and routine are your friends when caring for a person with dementia.
Use positive reinforcement. Logic and reason does not work. Focus on short, simple sentences, stay positive and maybe mention a treat or fun activity after the shower.
Always focus on "we" not "you". This gives the idea of doing something together.
Make the bathroom warm and comfortable. Turn on a space-heater, play soft music, to create a spa atmosphere. Lay towels on items they may sit on. I light candles to add to the atmosphere!
Using a shower bench reduces the effort needed to take a shower. Less standing and much safer.
Use a hand-held shower head. The overhead spray can be terrifying to a person with dementia. they may not be able to see where the water is coming from. By using a hand-held you can control where the water hits them.
Make sure there are no surprises. At every step let them know what's happening and coach them through it. Also, let them do as much as possible themselves.
Use extra towels for comfort and warmth. You can always use towels to cover the parts you're not washing. When done showering wrap them in warm towels to keep them from getting chilled.
