This Black History Month, we are highlighting Black pioneers, clinicians, researchers, and advocates whose contributions have shaped the field of mental health. Throughout February, we will be sharing spotlights on individuals whose work advanced research, improved treatment, and helped move mental health care toward greater equity and understanding.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller (1872–1953), the first Black psychiatrist in the United States and a true pioneer in mental health.

Dr. Fuller was a groundbreaking physician, neuropathologist, and researcher whose early work helped advance understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. At a time when opportunities for Black physicians were severely limited, he built a legacy of scientific excellence and dedication to patient care.

His contributions helped shape modern psychiatry and opened doors for future generations of Black clinicians and researchers.

We celebrate Dr. Fuller and the lasting impact of his work and we remain committed to advancing equitable, evidence-based mental health care for all.

🌟 Happy National Hugging Day! 🤗

Did you know hugs aren’t just comforting, they’re good for your mental health too?

Science shows that hugging releases oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” which helps strengthen bonding, trust, and feelings of safety. Oxytocin also helps reduce cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, which can lower anxiety and help calm the nervous system.

Research has found that longer hugs, around 20 seconds, may reduce stress responses and can even lower heart rate and blood pressure. Studies also suggest that people with strong social connections, including frequent hugs, may be more resilient to illness and stress.

Hugs can be a simple but powerful way to support emotional wellbeing, as long as they’re welcome and consensual. Today, consider sharing a hug, a kind word, or a moment of connection with someone who could use it. 💛

Our offices are closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, we’re reminded that growth, healing, and change don’t happen all at once.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

When it comes to mental health, that first step might be asking for help, starting a conversation, or simply acknowledging that you’re not okay. You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward.

We honor Dr. King by continuing to take small, courageous steps toward hope, understanding, and care. 💙

📘 : What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

Welcome to , a weekly series from Lapeer CMH where we break down different types of therapy, what they are, how they work, and who they can help.

This week: Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based approach that helps people explore and resolve ambivalence about change. Rather than being told what to do, MI focuses on strengthening a person’s own motivation and confidence to make changes that align with their values.

MI focuses on:
🗣️ Collaboration – working together in a supportive, non-judgmental way
🔍 Evoking motivation – helping individuals identify their own reasons for change
💪 Empowerment – building confidence and self-efficacy

Motivational Interviewing is often used in substance use treatment, but it is also effective in supporting people with mental health concerns, health-related behavior changes, and life transitions. It helps make change feel more achievable, realistic, and self-directed.

📝 Note: Some therapies in this series may not be offered at Lapeer CMH and are shared for educational purposes. Contact us to learn more about available services.
