A few ladies from afar have their say!

Divya (India/Australia) Review for Powerfully Pregnant
"Donna is a wealth of knowledge, warmth and wisdom. The tips and techniques she teaches in her book help us prepare, stay calm and be confident for labour, birth and beyond. It provided me with the tools that made my birthing experience a positive one and allowed me to go into labour naturally. All of the skills learnt in this process assisted us to feel ready, and I found it just as empowering.. This book is a must.. Would recommend her to every pregnant woman to get ready for the big day! "

Charuka (Sri Lanka/Staten Island. NY) Website review
"My husband and I were born in Sri Lanka and moved to the US as adults. We had our first baby in California. Following my doctor’s advice, I gained too much weight and did not feel good. At 43 weeks I was induced with pitocin and the labor was very difficult with numerous complications.

When living in Utah. Years later, we consulted a midwife who used the Powerfully Pregnant book so I bought that in 2014 and in 2020 I bought it again and have followed the lifestyle. I called Donna when I was pregnant with my second baby in 2020. We talked for an hour and after the call I felt at ease. After that night, Donna has been involved in my life on an ongoing basis.

We had moved to Staten Island and the hospital closest to me had the second highest rate in cesarean surgeries in the nation. So I chose to go to another hospital a few minutes farther away. The doctor thought I had miscalculated and came to the conclusion that I got pregnant 2 weeks later than I had because I was not as big as some of the other ladies.

Very near my estimated due date, I went into labor at home spontaneously. I had mild contractions for a few hours and then called Donna. She stayed with me for a while and gave support then, when the contractions got more intense and closer together, told me it was time to go to the hospital.

I delivered my 7lb 8oz son within 45 minutes after arriving at the hospital in a very controlled and natural birth without any medication. It went so well that one nurse told me I could have had the baby at home. I highly recommend Donna."

"Thank you very much for all your support during my pregnancy. I’m almost back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I still have a small pouch but haven’t started any exercise except for walking with baby in a carrier.….
Thank you for everything. We are so so grateful.
Sending you lots of hugs."

Joni (Texas/Mexico) Book review
"The only thing I didn’t like about this book is that I found out about it on my 6th pregnancy and not before my first.
Everyone that plans to get pregnant or is pregnant should read this, this book and hypnobirthing are absolutely amazing.

I learned how important our diet is for morning sickness and that it’s not normal to feel sick or to gain too much extra weight during pregnancy.

Donna Young, the author also gives private coaching and she is the one that helped me figure out why I struggled so much in all my pregnancies, all my Doctors said I just had rib pain, she immediately told me it was my gallbladder and liver, I got it tested and she was 100% correct.

I can write all day about how great this book is, just buy it and follow it. You will be so grateful."

Therese (United Kingdom) Book review
"This is one of the best books I ever bought as a mum. This book was my bible throughout my 2nd pregnancy. I followed most of the advice and had a quick and natural birth after having a Cesarean delivery for my 1st baby. Highly recommended if you want a healthy pregnancy and quick delivery."

Not all midwives are created equally....
Erika's story, in her own words!

Now pregnant with my third child I made a secret determination within myself… to change my pregnancy & delivery story. What had happened before, with my first two, could be described as enduring, exhausting, unnecessarily injuring, and miraculous. The enduring & exhausting parts felt as though they couldn't be helped. The unnecessary injury part needed to stop. And while I was wishing I wanted to steer clear of the need for miracles.

I also knew that my ideal birth would only ever be wishful thinking if I didn't make some dramatic changes. I also didn't know where to start. But with each decision I made moving forward from this point, I was led to an experience of pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care that I once could only imagine. And this… is a brief story of that journey and the people and conditions that helped make it possible.

Birthing had always been an assumed process to be endured at the hospital under the mostly absent care of a doctor. I tried that route for the entirety of a 1-hour prenatal visit. After that experience, I decided I would go the home birth route. My reasoning then was that home birth was better suited for me for several reasons. First, I didn't like being told what to do especially without my questions answered first. Second, I didn't like the hospital setting. Third, I didn't like many practices in Western medicine. And most importantly fourth, I was wildly stubborn about who came in and out of my laboring room. If I had it my “introverted way” I would prefer birthing entirely alone.

Ultimately, my story is not one of comparison between the Dr. Guided, western medical, hospital birth story; and one of home birth. In fact, the contrast in my story came from one homebirth method and pre/postnatal care and another. So I'll start with my first and second birth stories as they were through the former method.

First Pregnancy, the stats: I was 24 years old. Before conceiving I was approx 176lbs. I followed a loose-no-restriction diet that emphasized protein, leafy greens, and vitamins. It also included calorie counting to ensure enough nutrients were being eaten. I ended that pregnancy at 230lbs approx. I labored for 26 hrs and delivered a 6lb baby boy. Now this doesn't look too bad for some on paper, but it was all the in-between things that made this pregnancy from beginning to after quite a trial in my life.

During pregnancy, I struggled with acne, constipation, fatigue, edema, low blood pressure crashes, cravings, and brain fog. But the real nightmares came during and after I delivered my son.
When labor began I opted for an e***a in hopes of cleaning out my constipated bowels. I had not passed a stool in several days.

During labor, I often struggled to stay conscious. Between the low blood pressure dips, drop in oxygen, physical fatigue, and stress I was beginning to feel the labor portion would never end. I was utilizing the hypnobirthing method to maintain labor progress but also allow myself some relief and rest.

Going 20 hrs strong, I was simply exhausted. The birth team and I attempted so many things without much reward for our efforts. Finally around the 24hr mark… my midwife, fearing for the baby due to heart rate concerns decided to intervene. She discovered my thinned cervix was pinched between my baby's head and the p***c bone, therefore being unable to dilate fully. And consequently trapping my superman-positioned newborn inside. Her miraculous discovery was met with a quick decision to push the cervical lip aside. Within seconds I entered transition. After 20 minutes of pushing, I had my bluish baby in my arms. He didn't pass his initial newborn tests but after some effort to get his lungs clear, he was coloring and breathing normally.

I had a significant tear through the back of my vaginal wall and had to endure suturing afterward. It took me nearly a week to feel I could walk normal again. I had to stay down for a significant amount of time and any small amount of overdoing it increased my bleeding.

My biggest concern post-delivery was, of course, my baby’s welfare. He was extremely jaundiced, had a caput (hematoma) on his head, had significant bruising, struggled to stay awake to nurse, had thrush, constipation, and worst of all he had colic.

My first-time mom's struggle with nursing was compounded by difficulty getting my baby latched properly onto my very flat ni***es. That struggle quadrupled when my infant couldn't stay awake long enough to drink longer than a minute or two. He would wake within an hour needing to be nursed again.

My midwife then offered what she knew of newborn care including using a cold cloth on my baby to keep him awake long enough to nurse. She taught me to gather and latch my babies properly without further ni**le damage. She also suggested natural remedies for the hematoma, bruising, and colic. Which for the most part were effective. But she sent us to the pediatrician for the jaundice.

We all survived our first pregnancy experience but when preparing for the second I didn't anticipate a repeat of the first.

Second pregnancy stats: I was 26 years old. Started the pregnancy at 180lbs approx. Ended pregnancy at 230lbs. I labored for 16 hours and delivered a beautiful 6lb baby girl.

The second pregnancy was quite similar to the first. I used the same midwife the same pregnancy method and the same home birth ideas. Some notable differences I recall include: I passed a stool the size of my baby's head several hours after delivery (this one still haunts me). The tear in the rear was significantly smaller than the first tear, but that nearly cost me a tear in the front. Some similarities: The labor was just as difficult. The baby was in a similar position despite my efforts for her not to be. The suturing, jaundice, slow recovery, struggle to nurse a wakeful baby, and colic were all a familiar nightmare.

I hope now you can see why, after two pregnancies, I felt the determination to change the story. But for the first several months of my third pregnancy, I was floundering to know what to do. Open to new possibilities I decided to not contact my previous midwife. I progressed in pregnancy as normal. Around 3 months in, the stars finally aligned when I talked to my sister-in-law about the midwife she had worked with. She told me all about Donna and her team. I was intrigued and also intimidated. Without knowing anything but what was shared I thought her program seemed strict and challenging. But I knew I needed this level of dedication if I was to change the experience of delivery I feared I would always be destined to endure.

Pregnancy number 3 stats: I was 28. I labored for 8 hours. I started pregnancy at 190lbs and ended after delivery 200lbs. I delivered a 6lb baby boy.

I had heard many things about Donna's program from others who had delivered with her including my sister-in-law, who had her second baby at home with Donna. My sister-in-law had shared the same midwife I had in my first two pregnancies so she had a good list of comparisons for me to consider. I’ll admit I was a little nervous about Donna's program because I knew she required me to stop all sugar. I struggled with emotional eating especially while pregnant and sugar was my go-to addiction.

After the first meeting with Donna, she looked me in the eye and promised me the results I had so longed to have, I was committed to my core. My commitment wasn't necessarily based on the promise, but on the look in her eye when she told me that she would reduce my labor time by half and never allow me to tear again. And believe me, mentally I had plenty of room to doubt her. I was sure the tissue around previous tears would be tight and weak from the previous injury. But she assured me she wouldn't let that happen.

Everything going into this delivery felt different and better. Without the sugar and grains, I didn't have blood sugar issues, edema, fatigue, acne, constipation, and crazy weight gain. With less weight on my body labor was so much easier. The exercises she suggested were phenomenal for hip pain relief, strengthening muscles that were too weak the last pregnancy and so much more. I followed the suggestions for ginger baths, evening primrose, herbal teas, and others to help in the delivery process and they really helped! The supplements, diet, and recipes she provided were also so good and satisfying.

I'll admit my biggest challenge with the diet was preparing food. I was much more of a light snacker and sandwich kind of person because I hadn't been taught how to prepare meals. But getting my hands on the recipes in her book was life-changing. Making my own food felt so much more empowering and also provided my kids and me with much more nutrient-dense meals. It made a huge difference in how much energy I had, and how much weight I gained, and (often overlooked) helped me feel better about myself.

I remember the day I was scheduled for my due date I was standing outside looking at the back fields and I felt a soothing calm come over me. I had every reason to panic This was my first baby without an ultrasound, without my usual midwife, without any security of what to expect but I felt 1000 times more at ease because I knew it would be different. I also had immense faith that it would be better than I could ever have imagined, and it was.

During delivery, Donna's team was the picture of efficient, intuitive, and knowledgeable. They prepared everything for me I didn't need to fuss about making up the bed and such. I had dips in my blood sugar levels and she had a solution. I started to fatigue and she had a natural electrolyte drink. I felt so much more taken care of, and the things we did really worked for relief!

She told me to work with my contractions to push. I listened to everything she told me to do and received exactly what she had promised. I didn't tear and I delivered my baby boy in half the time my previous baby came. I was also so much more alert, energized, and present to the final delivery.

The best part was that I felt so good and my baby was in amazing shape. My baby needed a little help to clear his lungs but he didn't have major bruising, hematoma, or shoulder dystocia. I was also up on my feet sooner, didn't have prolonged bleeding, and all the other issues of previous births. My baby wasn't jaundiced, didn't have colic, and didn't have issues latching (because I was much thinner after this baby came my ni***es were not as flat). This birth and delivery went so well that my husband and I agreed that we could have another baby. Which wasn't the case after our second baby. The agreement was that any future baby was also to be delivered with Donna and her team.

Pregnancy number 4 stats: I was 30. I started the pregnancy at 180 lbs and ended after delivering 190 lbs. I labored for 6 hours and delivered a 6lbs baby boy.

Overall the experience was essentially the same. There were no complications and delivery was just a breeze. My baby was perfectly healthy and my recovery after was: hours for soreness; days for swelling; and a week for bleeding.

My case of contrast may not be the norm but I hope that women who intend on using Donna's program, really follow her every suggestion. I would love to have every woman experience the same wonderful birth story that I have experienced. Free from unnecessary traumas, present, and full of love.

This is an open letter from a little gal who used our program and had her babies in a military hospital! Awesome story!

Donna,
Having had the pleasure to be one of your ladies has been nothing short of amazing!
I still remember being a little girl and you coming over to our house in Idaho. My mom had just had my sister! I have dreamt of having a home birth for so long, and I just know that the day that it happens I will feel complete!
I remember the first time I read your book, Powerfully Pregnant and I was in awe of all the wonderful ladies that have been under your care. Reading through the recipes, recommendations, do’s and don’ts as a young lady. Later in 2014 I found out I was pregnant and knew I wanted to follow your program. I was very young, 19 and stationed in Virgina at the time, my mom was all the way across the country and I was scared. You held my hand from afar and walked me through everything, and everytime a new phase in pregnancy was coming around you explained to me what we were going to go through and experience. I didn’t listen all the time and it showed when I had to have extra care from you, but you made sure we adjusted, adapted, and overcame. Fast forward to my birth and I was able to have a natural birth with support from my mom, my husband and you!
In 2022 I found out I was pregnant yet again! I was so excited and we had kept in touch over the years so as soon as I found out I reached out again. I was determined to follow your program! Your program provided so much insight, so much wisdom, and so much care! I was empowered to advocate for myself when I had to do my routine doctor’s appointments at my military care facility. The doctor’s were shocked at how much I knew and how I stood my ground and did not budge. When I got the call that I was a high risk pregnancy you said “Elizabeth, don’t worry, everything is going to be okay. Here is what we are going to do..” And you proceeded to give me a few supplements and explained how it was going to help. I immediately ordered them and started taking them. Time went by and everything seemed to be okay. My pregnancy felt like a breeze and I could notice the world of difference between my first and current pregnancy due to following your program so strictly. I was determined to model my mom’s pregnancy and labor. When it was time for me to have my baby girl I called you, my mom was with me and we all had a sweet moment of reminiscing and then we got me to the hospital to have this baby! I got there and told them I wanted a bouncy ball, and I wanted to give birth in the kneeling cow position. I labored so well the doctor’s were surprised at how calm and collected I was throughout the whole process. When I dilated to an 8 they said I needed to get in the bed because I was walking around and they felt as if I would drop the baby since I wasn’t in any kind of pain. I got on the bed but did not labor on my back at all. Everything went so smooth and I was ready to push! I told the nurse and they wanted me to wait and I looked at my mom and she said she would catch the baby if I didn’t want to wait. I quickly positioned myself into a squat and the room filled with nurses and doctors and I began to push, 1 time, 2 times, out came a beautiful, healthy babygirl with no issues whatsoever! She latched on immediately and everything was blissful and beautiful. The doctor’s said they had never seen such calmness and control. Everything we did had a purpose and meaning, I have raved about Powerfully pregnant to so many people and they have all been amazed with their bodies and the program. I could not have had such a beautiful and healthy pregnancy without your guidance and help. Thank you so much for empowering not only me, but countless ladies around the world. I can not wait to continue to work with you the next time I end up pregnant!

Who doesn't love a good birth story with a happy ending??

~~Brynlie's story~~
When I became pregnant with our first child I quickly became enthralled with the idea of having a home birth. Being in my own cozy bed, lights down low, and only a midwifery team and my husband around for the birth sounded so peaceful to me. I didn’t think I would ever be able to get my husband on board with it so for a while I let go of the idea of having a home birth.

At the beginning of my pregnancy, I decided to go to a popular obstetrician at my local hospital. At the appointments, they were pretty quick and the doctor I had chosen to work with seemed to be nice enough but after each appointment, I left with a feeling of knowing this was not where I wanted to give birth. The bright white lights, the blue rubber gloves, and the smell of alcohol in the air didn’t feel like the place to have the spiritual birth experience that I had been dreaming of.

About four months into my pregnancy my husband got a job offer in another state about thirteen hours away from our hometown. We didn’t want to leave our beloved hometown but we were desperate for my husband to have a higher income so that I would be able to stay home with the baby.

We ended up packing our things and moving to a different state, I was so worried about finding a new doctor and I put it off for a while once we got there. I ended up researching about midwives in the area and I begged my husband to at least let me have a consultation with a midwife that I found and he said okay. I was so excited. My husband was worried about my and the baby's safety but I asked him to trust me and he did.

I ended up working with this midwife and I got my home birth in the end, a 10 lb 1 oz baby boy that I had at 42 weeks. I loved being at home during and after the birth, although not everything went exactly how I had wished it would but I learned a lot about how I wanted it to go the next time around.

I have always known the importance of eating healthy but during pregnancy with my first, I didn’t eat as healthy as I should have. I probably had too much sugar, bread, and nowhere near enough protein. Meat did not sound appetizing to me my whole pregnancy so I hardly ever ate any. I came to regret this when I developed pretty painful diastisis recti from not having enough protein to support my abdominal muscles. I knew next time I wanted to work with someone who prioritized the importance of a good diet and healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.

In the past, I had briefly heard of the wonderful midwife named Donna in our hometown that had decades of experience and I always dreamed of working with her one day but I didn’t think that would ever happen, especially now that we had moved to a different state. I always had Donna in my heart wishing and hoping that one day I could work with her.

When I became pregnant with our second child (which was not planned) I was pretty distraught. Our son had just turned one and I didn’t know how I was going to take care of a toddler and a new baby in a state far from home and far from friends and family. I had really struggled mentally the first year of my son's life. I missed my family and I grieved not being able to share the first year of my baby’s life with them and to have them around to support me. I became very lonely and felt like I had no purpose.

Although we did not plan to have a second child just yet, I knew I wanted to welcome this baby and pregnancy with love and I knew I couldn’t do that living so far from home. My husband and I decided to move back to our hometown so that we could be closer to family and have more help.

Before we moved home I called Donna and asked if she had availability to work with me and she said she did and she started working with me over the phone until we moved back home and started having regular appointments at our home. I was truly over the moon excited to work with Donna, my dream of having a home birth in her care was coming true.

Moving home was a really good choice for us, I finally started to feel better mentally and had family and friends to surround myself with. I was also so happy to see my son play with his cousins and grandparents.

When I started working with Donna I immediately ordered my herbs and supplements and started taking them, I also started the diet and felt great! I had a little morning sickness in the first trimester but after I stopped eating sugar that went away. I drank my tea every day and I loved it. I think the tea really cleared my skin up and made it glow. I also think cutting out dairy, sugar, and bread really cleared up my skin too. Every day I would go on a walk early in the morning with my son and I tried to stay active throughout the day. I felt the best I have ever felt while following Donna’s program.

As each appointment came I was always excited to see Donna and Holt, I admire them both so much. I felt so lucky to be able to work with them. Donna proved to be a provider I knew I could fully trust and this was very important to me, I knew I was in the best hands. I loved all of Donna’s beliefs about eating healthy, whole foods and it just felt like a match made in heaven all around.

Our baby girl was due December 31st and going through Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas around all the sugar was pretty tempting but I was glad I stuck to Donna’s program because it really paid off in my pregnancy and birth. With my first birth, I had extremely painful contractions with no breaks in between them for 18 hours straight, and I really believe sugar played a big role in amplifying my contractions and causing more inflammation in my body. My family felt bad for me that I couldn’t eat sugar on the holidays but even though it was hard, I didn’t care because it was so worth it! My body felt so good and my back pain disappeared from eating real whole foods. I’m so grateful that Donna held me to it because she really drove me to stick to the program and I probably wouldn’t have without her encouragement.

Some odd days before Christmas Eve Donna had come over to check me and I was dilated to 4 cm, I was pretty dilated and stretchy, so this baby was going to come quickly once my water broke. I was really hoping to at least make it through Christmas so that my baby wouldn’t have to have a Christmas birthday, although I’m sure it would be special to give birth on Christmas but I was okay with waiting for the craziness of the holidays to be over before this baby came.

Somehow I made it through Christmas without going into labor and I was relieved that I did because we had a lot of family over for Christmas and I really wanted to have the peace of mind knowing that no one would be around for the birth. With my first birth, I had only my husband and birth team there and that's how I wanted it to be this time too. I think it’s important to treat birth as a sacred event I didn’t want my whole family there watching. To me, it is so nice to not have to worry about anyone else and just put all your focus on getting that baby out safely and not worrying about other people’s energy around you in such an intimate, sacred moment.

On December 27th Donna came over at around 11:00 AM and checked me and I was dilated to 5 cm. Somehow Donna knew this baby would come that day. I was still in disbelief that I was in labor because I had no pain at this point, my contractions just felt like mild Braxton-Hicks which I was grateful to not be in pain but I was worried I wasn’t actually in labor.

At 3 pm I was dilated to about 6 ½ cm. and Donna and her assistant decided to go get some food real quick and to call her if anything changed. I still was feeling no pain at that point, I remember having pressure in my tailbone and my legs were tired from walking a lot to get labor going but other than that my contractions still didn’t hurt. My friend texted me and asked how things were going and I remember telling her that I really didn’t think a baby was going to come that day because I could barely feel my contractions and this was such a different experience from my first labor. I texted my friend again at around 5:40 PM and said “dilated to an 8 still no pain haha”.

Soon after I sent that text I did start to feel some more intense pressure and I started to have to breathe more through them but still, they weren’t crampy and they were extremely bearable. During the contractions I felt like I could feel my cervix stretching with each wave and I was surprised at how in tune I felt with my body, I could feel her through the whole birth and felt very connected to her in the womb.

At around maybe 10:30 PM Donna checked me and I’m not sure exactly what I was dilated to, I think a 9 but we decided to break my water, and then came the more intense contractions. They were still easy enough for me to control my breathing with but they did start to hurt and I remember thinking “wow this sucks, it was so easy before! I don’t want to do this for long.”

While I was lying there breathing through my contractions I knew that if I were to get up on my knees she would come out quick and I could get this over with. On my next break between contractions, I got up on my knees and waited for another contraction to come and when it did I could feel her head descending and as she was crowing Donna was telling me to wait to push her out so that I wouldn’t tear but my body felt like it was just pushing her out for me and so I just pushed and out she came. When she came out it didn’t really hurt, it wasn’t pleasant but it was so much easier compared to my first.

My beautiful baby girl that I had dreamed about was staring up at me with her little eyes and I was instantly in love. Easily one of the best days of my life. She weighed 6 lbs 12 oz, was born at 10:54 PM, tiny and perfect. She came out with a nice pink color and had some good cries. I was so shocked at how quickly she came out I felt so blessed to have such an easy labor and I felt I deserved it after how painful and long my first birth was.

Donna and her assistant cleaned me up and checked if I needed stitches, I had no tearing, therefore, I didn’t need any. They took great care of me and our baby, I felt so much love. Before Donna left she got me all cozied up in bed with my husband and our baby, she kissed me on the head and left us to get some rest. This felt so special to me, I was so grateful to have a midwife who cared so much for her girls.

Donna came back throughout the week and month to check on me and our baby and also my husband, she cares a lot about the dad’s well being too. She continues to help me to this day and I feel that I’ve made a lifelong friend. She has taught me so much about birth, pregnancy, babies, and herbs. I’ve learned so much from Donna and she is truly a powerhouse of wisdom when it comes to all things pregnancy and birth.

Our daughter's birth was a dream come true for me and I couldn’t have done it without Donna and her team, I am forever grateful that I got to have her as my midwife.
