I wasn’t planning to get into therapy, not yet. I didn’t think I’d want to sit and listen for an hour at a time.
But then I found myself constantly frustrated by how hard it was to find accessible therapists to refer people to. Especially ones without month long waiting lists and who weren’t offering the same cookie-cutter, label-driven treatments; the kind that often keep people stuck in the same cycle.
At the same time, I began working closely with first responders. Many of them laughed at the idea of therapy but not because they didn’t want the help, but because they feared therapists wouldn’t get it. That they’d be met with someone out of touch with their world, asking for too much “touchy-feely” too soon, and not enough understanding of how trauma actually works in the brain and body.
So I made a decision.
Piece by piece, I created a space where people could show up as they are. A place where I could be the kind of therapist I wished more people had access to; someone grounded, safe, and able to sit with the hard things while helping people learn about themselves.
I leaned into brain and nervous system-based approaches. I committed to being real, trauma-informed, and culturally competent.
And now… here we are. 🖤
