According to a recent study in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, about 60% of people who have experienced traumatic brain injuries are affected by chronic pain (pain that is persistent or recurring for more than 3 months). Some individuals in the study experienced chronic pain up to 30 years post-injury.

The study suggests that chronic pain occurs at various points after the injury, and may interfere with initial and long-term recovery. Pain treatments such as medications, physical therapy, and home exercise programs were commonly reported among the participants. More about the study can be found in this issue of the Brain Injury Association of America’s magazine, The Challenge: Volume 18, Issue 1 of THE Challenge!

Rest plays a crucial role in allowing the brain to recover following an injury by allowing it to focus resources on repairing damaged cells and restoring function.

After a brain injury, blood flow to the brain decreases temporarily while the demand for energy to repair damaged neurons increases. That’s why participating in activities that are cognitively or physically demanding can delay recovery and exacerbate symptoms. Both physical and cognitive rest (such as staying away from screens, reading, or solving complex problems) helps to conserve energy and optimize the healing process. A consistent sleep routine allows the brain to clear cellular waste and strengthen neural connections.

If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution, consider donating blood. During January, blood donations tend to be in short supply because of the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather, and illnesses.

The process of donating blood typically takes about an hour and includes registration, a brief health history, mini-physical, the actual donation that can take around 8-10 minutes, and post-donation refreshments. Most organizations can accept blood donations from individuals older than 17 years of age who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health. Blood donations usually can be made every eight weeks.

The New Year is synonymous with resolutions for many people. If you’re considering starting a new habit, here are some strategies to consider:
• Begin with manageable changes. For example, instead of committing to a 30-minute workout daily, start with just 5 minutes.
• Set clear goals and define specifically what you want to achieve.
• Attach your new habit to an existing routine. For example, if you want to meditate, do it right after brushing your teeth in the morning. This creates a trigger that reminds you to perform your new habit.
• Track your progress for motivation.
• Stay accountable by sharing your goals with others.
• Be patient. Research shows it can take 21 to 66 days to establish a habit.
• Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small.

If you find yourself around a lot of people this holiday season, remember that washing your hands with soap and water is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs and infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people touch their eyes, noses, or mouths without realizing it, which allows germs to enter the body. Germs from unwashed hands also can contaminate food, drinks, or surfaces like handrails and phones, spreading illness to others. To wash your hands properly:
• Wet your hands, then apply soap.
• Rub your hands for at least 20 seconds, covering the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. (Hum the "Happy Birthday" song twice.)
• Rinse your hands under clean, running water, and dry with a clean towel.
