According to a recent study in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, about 60% of people who have experienced traumatic brain injuries are affected by chronic pain (pain that is persistent or recurring for more than 3 months). Some individuals in the study experienced chronic pain up to 30 years post-injury.
The study suggests that chronic pain occurs at various points after the injury, and may interfere with initial and long-term recovery. Pain treatments such as medications, physical therapy, and home exercise programs were commonly reported among the participants. More about the study can be found in this issue of the Brain Injury Association of America’s magazine, The Challenge: Volume 18, Issue 1 of THE Challenge!
