JAMES ALEXANDER STOCKWELL, II

James Alexander Stockwell II, age 57, passed away unexpectedly on April 22, 2026, leaving behind a silence far too loud for those who loved him.

A lifelong Laredo resident, James now rests in eternal peace with the Lord, reunited with his beloved mother, Raquel Rodarte Reyna, who passed away in March 2026. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Fred Reyna Jr., his beloved former wife, Adriana Stockwell, of Laredo, and his grandparents Jose and Elia V. Rodarte of Laredo, and Julian F. Stockwell of Benavides, Texas.

James is survived by his father, James A. Stockwell, and his stepmother Rosie Stockwell, of Edinburg, Texas, his grandmother Elma C. Stockwell of Benavides, Texas, brothers Fred Reyna III and Patrick Stockwell (Amy) of Austin, his sisters Christina Reyna Baird (John) of Buda, Texas, Jamie Stockwell (Rebecca) of Washington, D.C., Larena Reyna of Austin, along with nieces, nephews and many dear friends, students, and lives forever changed by his presence.

James was impossible to fit into a mold. He had the spirit of an old cowboy, equal parts rugged soul, gentle protector, storyteller, wanderer, and friend.

The way James lived was legendary to those closest to him. He had an instinctive kindness and generosity, with a heart of pure gold. He carried hardship with quiet dignity and offered warmth and compassion to others even during his own struggles.

James was a lifelong learner whose accomplishments became part of family legend. Friends often joked that James had more degrees than a thermometer, a testament to both his scholarly drive and his endless curiosity. He pursued knowledge passionately and carried conversations that could move effortlessly from humor to philosophy to music to life itself.

A 1987 graduate of J.W. Nixon High School who ran track and held a state record for many years. James continued his education at Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State University), earning a Bachelor of Science; post-graduate studies at Texas A&M International University in Laredo; and Texas A&M University College Station, earning both a Master’s and PhD.

James was deeply devoted to helping others and spent his career teaching special needs children at his alma mater, Nixon High, a role that reflected the patience, empathy, and gentleness at the center of who he was. He showed love in a way that made people feel seen, and he received it just as openly.

Above all else, love defined James’s life. He loved fiercely and loyally, showing up for family and friends with humor, wisdom, protection, and compassion. His laughter, stories, intelligence, and enormous heart leave an imprint that will never fade.

He loved animals deeply, especially his beloved dogs, his wonderfully unique Jack Russell and Basset Hound companions who reflected his own one-of-a-kind spirit.

Music was woven through the fabric of his soul, especially the blues, the kind that tells the truth about pain, endurance, redemption, and love. He had a cherished collection of guitars that he loved to play. Settling in on his couch on Saturday nights to watch Austin City Limits, he often called his loved ones during the show to talk about the musicians and their performances. We take comfort that he is finally home, finally free, singing with the angels after a long road traveled with courage and soul. His memory rides on in every act of kindness, every blues song and guitar solo drifting through the night, every loyal dog waiting at the door, and every person lucky enough to have known the rare and beautiful soul that he was.

He often sang, “Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities, forget about your worries and your strife.”

So go on now, James, in blessed peace.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church located at 114 W. Fay St. in Edinburg, TX on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial visitation will be on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Aguero Funeral Home, 4402 E. Saunders St., Laredo, TX 78041. A rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m.

05/07/2026

Maurelia Mancera Paez passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026.

“Buela, Wicha, Mrs. Paez” as she was affectionately called by so many lived a quiet and simple life. She overcame many obstacles in her life, including her parents and siblings’ shared experience of living in Laredo through the Great Depression, starting a young family with her husband Ramiro Paez Sr. and overcoming his unexpected passing while maintaining her independence to carry on. She learned to live beyond the loss of her three children – Patricia, Ramiro Jr. and Ricardo – and found strength in the love of her family and close friends.

Maurelia had an uncanny entrepreneurial spirit and reaped financial success from her many talents. She was a talented seamstress with established clients for tailoring, dressmaking and custom Halloween attire and was a decorator who crafted seasonal items with sass and a glue-gun. Ms. Paez was a skilled baker of all treats including her infamous pineapple upside down cake, hojarascas, and cupcakes. Christmas celebrations were marked by an annual large-scale operation to cook tamales and later share with friends, neighbors and passersby’s.

She commanded and gave respect to everyone, at times brutally honest, but always with a tinge of love and empathy. Maurelia loved coffee and pan dulce, dining out at Whataburger with all the toppings, Tejano and traditional Mariachi music, playing loteria, weekend carne asada, and her favorite color was purple.

Ms. Paez was a devout Catholic and completed many trips to San Juan de los Lagos, supported her parish at Mother Cabrini Church and prayed the Holy Rosary on a daily basis.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ramiro Paez Sr., children Patricia Paez Pacheco, Ramiro Paez Jr, and Ricardo Paez Sr., parents Antonio Mancera and Nieves Mancera, siblings Alfonso Mancera Sr. and Florentina Mancera Trisket.

She is survived by her grandchildren Ramiro (Cynthia) Paez III, Jessica Paez, Grizelda (Richard) Guzman, Gustavo (Miriam) Ricalde Jr, Edgar (Oscar Guerra) Ricalde, and Ricardo Paez Jr, great-grandchildren Rochelle Paez, Ramiro Paez IV, Andria Paez, Samantha Martinez, Gustavo Ricalde III, Gianluca Ricalde and Gianna Ricalde. She will be missed by her siblings Maria Teresa Mancera, Anna Gonzalez, Lydia Mendiola and Luciano Mancera. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter in law Griselda (Arnulfo) Zapata and son-in-law Roberto (Martha Trevino) Pacheco.

A special thank you is offered to La Frontera Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and its staff, Dr. Luis Benavides and Mr. Brunner for their care of almost 5 years. Ms. Paez lived her final years in dignity due to the care provided by supportive staff and caregivers.

Loved ones can honor her memory by doing as she would: inviting your neighbor for a cup of coffee, driving a friend to a doctor's appointment, preparing a large meal for the sake of calling loved ones to grab a to -go plate and offering a prayer for the sick and frail.

She will be greatly missed and is now in the warm of embrace of her loved ones in Heaven.

Private inurnment will follow at a later date.
