Trauma fragments memory.
Van der Kolk discusses how the brain encodes trauma differently. Instead of chronological narratives, survivors often experience vivid sensory or emotional flashbacks.
Healing involves integrating these memories—not erasing them, but placing them in time and context so they no longer feel like they’re happening now.

Safety isn’t just a concept—it’s a state of the nervous system.
Van der Kolk points to the ventral vagal state—the foundation for connection, curiosity, and calm. This state can be nurtured through safe relationships, soothing environments, and body-based work.
You don’t have to wait for safety to come to you. You can help your body learn what it feels like again.

New experiences can help reshape the brain after trauma.

Van der Kolk emphasizes that novelty—whether a new hobby, environment, or connection—helps create new neural links. It allows the brain to build fresh stories; ones not tied to survival alone.

Even small changes matter. The nervous system learns through experience that life can be more than reactivity.

Interoception is the ability to sense what’s happening inside the body—hunger, heartbeat, breath.

Trauma often blunts this capacity. Survivors may struggle to identify what they feel, physically or emotionally. Van der Kolk sees this as a key area for recovery.

Rebuilding interoceptive awareness allows for better self-regulation. It teaches the body that it’s safe to feel again.

Grounding helps reorient to the present when trauma symptoms arise.

Van der Kolk highlights the use of sensory anchors—like textures, smells, or weighted objects—to signal safety to the nervous system.

These tools don’t solve trauma, but they create moments of stability. That’s where deeper healing can begin.

Even when trauma is "over," the body may stay stuck in a protective state.

Van der Kolk explains how trauma lingers in the nervous system. We might flinch at safe touches, freeze in low-risk settings, or panic without clear reasons.

These responses are not irrational—they’re residues of survival. Healing invites the body to learn that the danger has passed.
