Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body and is used in over 300 different physiological processes. Unfortunately, magnesium is also one of the most pervasive deficiencies in our society today. Could the lack of magnesium be influencing your health negatively? This article breaks down the signs of a magnesium deficiency and the best ways to get more in your diet.

According to American neurosurgeon Norman Shealy, MD, PhD, almost every known disease is associated with a magnesium deficiency. This may sound like a bold statement at first but it actually makes a lot of sense considering the number of roles it plays in the body. This also explains why there are such a diverse set of symptoms that occur when you are not getting enough of it.

There are 10 major signs that clue me in as to whether or not someone has a magnesium deficiency.

Love is an action and not an emotion. We may feel as though we love those in our lives...but are we demonstrating it on a daily basis? I would imagine we could all improve the way we demonstrate love to those in our lives. Father, help us to imprint this understanding on our hearts and minds and love as You love!

These oatmeal cookie dough bites are a perfect bite sized treat for your sweet tooth! Simple to make and only require a few ingredients. Recipe from Kristina, our Director of Nutrition and Social Media Strategy

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup rolled oats
½ cup cashews OR h**p seeds
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup (packed full) pitted dates OR raisins
¼ cup raisins (optional)
1-3 teaspoons of water, if needed

METHOD:
1. In a food processor, blend the oats and cashews (or h**p seeds) until they are fine like a coarse flour. Add cinnamon and continue to blend.
2. If using dates, remove the pits. Add the dates (or the ½ cup raisins) to the food processor. Blend the ingredients together.
3. Add the vanilla, if using. Pulse together. If the dough is having a hard time sticking together add 1-3 teaspoons of water (start with 1 and add more as needed) to the mixture and continue to process. The dough should start to form one large ball or at least stick together well when pinched.
4. If adding raisins, spread the dough out on a plate or cutting board and sprinkle the raisins on top. Fold the dough together until the raisins are well incorporated into the mixture. Roll the dough into 12-15 small balls.
5. Place the bites into a large glass container and transfer to the fridge or the freezer to allow it to set. Then enjoy!

You know what's better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why do I keep sharing this message? Because we keep selling our kids short labeling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Here are some examples of messages I like for different ages:
⁣⠀⠀
For 2-3yo kids I usually break it down by color. Although it's not 100% accurate, it’s a good framework to get started. ⁣⠀⠀
❤️ Red: gives you a strong heart⁣⠀⠀
🧡 Orange: helps you see in the dark⁣⠀⠀
💛Yellow: helps your body heal cuts⁣⠀⠀
💚Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness⁣⠀⠀
💜💙Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain⁣⠀⠀
💟White: gives you energy⁣⠀⠀
⠀
For 4s and 5s you can start being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you be able to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones be strong.⠀
⠀
For 4s/5s and 6s you can introduce the idea that some foods do a lot of things in their bodies and some foods do a few things.⠀
⠀
For 6s and 7s you can introduce the concept of vitamins and minerals - tell them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Learn about the body.⠀
⠀
For 8s and 9s - learn even more about different things in foods. ⠀
⠀
And so on.⠀
⠀
All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. That's more powerful than anything you could ever tell them.⠀
