Trigger Points - Wrist Extensor Muscles 🖐️

Trigger points in the wrist extensors, particularly the extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi ulnaris, and extensor carpi radialis, are linked to repetitive gripping activities. Untreated, they can lead to complex injuries, as seen in long-distance drivers from repetitive hand use for steering. These points cause the wrist extensor muscles to shorten and become inefficient, leading to further complications as other muscles compensate. They also develop from injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome or trauma, often overlooked while treating the main injury.

Characteristics of Wrist Extensor Trigger Point Pain:

- Causes pain in forearm, elbow, wrist, hand, and finger stiffness.
- Leads to tennis elbow and painful grip.

Anatomy of the Wrist Extensor Muscles:

- Extensor carpi radialis longus originates from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus.
- Extensor carpi ulnaris and extensor carpi radialis brevis originate from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.
- These muscles extend to the metacarpals.

Functionality:

- Extends and stabilizes the wrist.
- Crucial for gripping and fine motor tasks.

Common Indications:

- Pain and tenderness in the forearm/wrist.
- Weak and painful grip and finger stiffness.

Causes:

- Extensive computer mouse/keyboard use.
- Repetitive gripping like writing, ironing, using tools.
- Wrist fractures, falls, casts, racket sports, and playing musical instruments.

Advice for Patients:

- Ergonomically adjust your workstation.
- Take frequent wrist/finger stretching breaks.
- Use wrist braces during repetitive tasks.
- Strengthen wrist extensor muscles.

Trigger Point Therapy Techniques:

- Spray and Stretch
- Deep Stroking Massage
- Compression
- Muscle Energy Techniques
- Positional Release
- Dry Needling

What Triggers Plantar Fasciitis Pain?

👉 Plantar fasciitis causes persistent foot pain, making daily activities challenging.

👉 It's common in runners and individuals with tight tendons, improper footwear, or sudden changes in physical activity.

👉 Gentle stretching during massage sessions helps loosen tight structures and improve flexibility.

Plantar fasciitis, a painful condition of the foot, often arises from factors affecting the plantar fascia, the ligament connecting the heel to the toes. Sudden increases in physical activity, such as intensified training for runners or changes in training surfaces, can trigger this condition. Tightness in the Achilles tendon and improper footwear are also known triggers. This condition can be debilitating, hindering daily activities and causing persistent pain.

Massage therapy plays a crucial role in managing plantar fasciitis. By manipulating soft tissues like muscles and tendons, it enhances circulation and reduces tension. A skilled massage therapist can use deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy to target the plantar fascia and surrounding muscles, providing significant relief.
