It’s the first full week of school..

Thursday was the official first day of school for the Las Cruces School District for all students! Our school-based clinics for Rio Grande Prep Institute and Centennial High School are officially open and accepting patients!

What makes SCHOOL-BASED clinics wonderful for parents, students, and staff alike?

Our school-based clinics functions just like a regular family practice but with the perk of being on Campus. Students and staff have easy access to medical care that is convenient for everyone.

We have a full time Family Nurse Practitioner who can see your child for sick visits, well-child checks, referrals, SPORTS PHYSICALS, or any other concerns you may have regarding your child's health. At our School-based clinics we can prescribe medications (if needed), refer to specialist, order and draw lab work, and order imaging studies when indicated.

What makes this so great and convenient for parents?

As long as we have a parental consent form signed, we can see your child. Parents have the option to be present, but do not have to if we have a parental consent form signed. This means you don’t have to leave work to take your child to an appointment. Of course, we will keep you updated on the plan for your child and parents can be present if they choose.

If your child already has a P*P, just let us know and anything that we do will be faxed to your child’s P*P so they can stay current with your child’s health.

What does this mean for the students?

Students get to spend more time in the classroom and less time away from school. We pull your child from an elective class. After we see your child, we send them back to their class so they can continue with their school day (assuming they don’t have an illness requiring them to go home).
Call 575-525-4811 or 575-525-4813 today to schedule your child’s appointment. We also accept walk-in's!

As we start to prepare for summer fun and outdoor activities/sport, make sure you always carry sunscreen on you!

Did you know that skin cancer is becoming more common in young people? The best way to help prevent skin cancer is to always apply sunscreen when outside. Whether it is a cloudy day or a sunny day, you and your family should always use sunscreen or sun-protective wear to protect yours and your families skin against UVA and UVB ray’s. UVA rays cause skin aging and skin cancer such as melanoma. UVB ray’s cause sunburns, cataracts, and skin cancer.

So what Type of sunscreen is best?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you:
-Use a broad spectrum sunscreen (as it covers UVA and UVB rays)
-Make sure the SPF is at least 30.
-If a sunscreen says water resistant, it is only water resistant for up to 40 minutes. After 40 minutes it will need to be reapplied.
- Recommended Ingredients you should look for that provide the best protection are Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, and Avobenzone.
- Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and every 2 hours when outside/ after any water exposure

Other tips:
- Avoid being outside when the sun is at its highest which is between 10 am-2pm
- Always wear sunglasses, hats, and other sun-protective clothing
- Try to stay in the shade as much as possible
- Avoid tanning outside and tanning beds
- Try to get a good source of Vitamin D from your diet. (Click this link for good sources of Vitamin D: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/vitamin-d/)

With spring/summer upon us, lets talk about Asthma....

What is Asthma?
Asthma is a narrowing of the airway in the lungs.

So what are the symptoms of Asthma?

- Coughing
- Chest Tightness
- Shortness of breathe

What are some common asthma triggers in children and teenagers?
- viral illnesses (eg, the common cold)

How is asthma diagnosed?
Asthma is diagnosed by a Medical provider/doctor. The provider will screen your child/teenager for asthma by asking a series of questions, review history, performing a physical assessment, and may even order special tests to evaluate the severity level. Here at La Clinica school base, we do asthma evaluations, manage asthma symptoms, create asthma action plans, and referrals to lung specialist (if needed, depending on severity).

If you are concerned your child/teenager may be suffering from asthma, please call to schedule your appointment with one of our school-based clinics. Click the link below for clinic specific phone numbers.
