Melissa Marie was born and raised in the Mesilla Valley to self-employed parents that demonstrated what was possible through hard work and dedication. Growing up with her grandparents next door, on a busy chile farm; her entrepreneurship emerged early with Lemonade stands during harvest season. Growing up on the land, she gained an appreciation for fresh, local produce, natural remedies, and the importance of family. Growing up, the importance of obtaining higher education was deeply ingrained, and this led to bachelor and master’s degrees in project management and business administration. However, after working twelve (12) hard years in corporate and government environments, Melissa discovered she was drained mentally, physically, and emotionally; and that needed to change.
The result of that change was Reclaim Wellness: A Center for Holistic Healing, which opened August 1, 2016; with the goal of providing a place for alternative healers to practice their craft and help the community to heal in mind, body, and spirit. This venture led Melissa to New Mexico Doulas which was operating in Alamogordo, New Mexico at the time. After reviewing the various training organizations, Melissa chose to train with ProDoulas as a Labor and Postpartum Doula, but later also chose not to certify with this organization.
Melissa was then introduced to the HypnoBirthing – The Mongan Method, which led her to Haymarket, Virginia to train with her now mentor, Sarojini Alva. The bond they formed, almost instantly, gifting Melissa with a thirst for knowledge and a fascination with the power of the mind and spirit. Not only did Melissa complete her HypnoBirthing Certified Educator training in Virginia but she traveled back on several occasions where she later received her Reiki I and Reiki II Attunements, Hypnotherapy and Master Hypnotherapy training through the Alva Wellness Center and the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists.
Melissa regularly engages in continuing education opportunities in birth work, business skills, and wellness. She is currently focused on expanding her knowledge base in the areas of Reproductive Justice and Bereavement Doula work.
Over the years, Reclaim Wellness saw many successes and many failures; and in March of 2020 the decision was made to close the business and reorganize. However, during this time, Melissa was highly sought-after for her skills as a Master Hypnotist, specializing in trauma release work. While this work continues to be a passion, she really wanted to find a greater balance with the opportunity to practice Doula work in this next phase of her journey.
Reemerging in August of 2020 as Melissa Marie, LLC, she was met with fresh new faces and opportunities to truly get involved in the local birthing community through the New Mexico Doula Association. In addition, after having the opportunity to support her first home birth in July, she recognized that all her training and lived experience comes together when supporting women and birthing families. Recently, Melissa also recognized a need to explicitly state that she is a Full Spectrum Doula, supporting all reproductive health issues including overall health, fertility, miscarriage, abortion, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenthood. Additionally, Melissa serves the community as a voice for people of color; advocating for birth equity in New Mexico and Nationwide.
