🦴 Did you know that we offer a simple way to check your bone health as you age?

A DEXA scan (bone density test) is a quick, painless way to check your bone health. It’s similar to a regular X-ray, but measures the strength and mineral content of your bones instead of just taking pictures of them. Generally, a DEXA scan is recommended for women age 65 and older and men age 70 and older.

A scan can help detect osteoporosis, which weakens bones to the point that they can break easily. It is called a “silent disease” because people who develop it may not notice any changes until a bone breaks — usually a bone in the hip, spine or wrist. The condition is much more common in women, especially after menopause.

Don’t wait for a potential accident to determine if you have osteoporosis. Ask your provider if a DEXA scan is right for you and then call 575.521.5270 to schedule.

At MMC, our employees are making a difference every day, not only inside the hospital walls, but also beyond them. From caring for patients and supporting coworkers to pursuing their passions and achieving great things in the community, we are proud to celebrate their accomplishments.

MMC is proud to celebrate one of our own, Marcie Fredericksen, who was recently introduced as the newest member of the Las Cruces United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Hall of Fame 2025.

Marcie has been an avid bowler for over the last 30 years, earning countless accomplishments along the way. She was named the 2019 Women’s Bowler of the Year and finished second in 2024. In the 2023 LCUSBC Open Tournament, she took first place in both Singles and All Events. Over the years, she has competed in at least four USBC Women’s Championships and seven USBC Open Championships, as well as numerous local and state tournaments. She has also been a proud member of the Ristas and The Crew, clubs within the Women’s and Mixed International Bowling Associations, for more than a decade.

For Marcie, bowling is more than a sport, it’s a family tradition.

“I’ve been bowling for over 30 years, and I got into bowling because of my mom,” she shared. “When I moved down here, she was bowling at the time, and she got me involved. My sisters were involved, my father was involved, and now my kids are involved. It’s all a family event. You meet so many different people traveling to tournaments in different states, it’s really a great bowling community.”

Beyond her recognition on the lanes, Marcie has been a vital part of MMC for the past 19 years, serving as the hospital’s Payroll Generalist.

When she first started at MMC, Marcie admits she was quiet and preferred staying behind the scenes. Over time, though, her role in Human Resources has helped her grow.

“I was a very quiet person when I first started. Working in human resources has opened me up a little bit. I’m able to communicate better with people now, and I really enjoy helping them.”

She credits much of that growth to her supportive HR team.

“I love my team. We’ve been together so long, and I’m still the baby of the group,” Marcie laughed. “It is great to be surrounded by a team of people who have been here for so long.”

One of the things she values most about working at MMC is seeing others grow within the hospital.

“It’s great to see people who started off in different departments transition into other roles and continue to grow within the company,” she said.

When it comes to bowling, Marcie says her teammates’ encouragement keeps her going, especially on tough days.

“Sometimes you get down because you’re not bowling very well, but teammates will invite me to tournaments, encourage me, and even help with advice on the lanes. That support means a lot.”

Whether she’s making a difference for MMC employees or striking down pins on the lanes, Marcie’s dedication, positivity, and passion shine through. Congratulations to her on this well-deserved honor!

At MMC, we’re proud to announce a new resource in the fight against opioid overdose deaths. We are the first hospital in our region to have a Narcan (naloxone) nasal spray vending machine in our Emergency Department lobby. Through a partnership with the New Mexico Health Care Authority, we are pleased to offer this life-saving tool free of charge to our community in such a heavily trafficked location.

Having Narcan on hand can make the difference between life and death during an opioid overdose emergency.

Preventable opioid overdose deaths have increased 457 percent since 1999 in the U.S., and the public health challenge remains a crisis here in New Mexico.

If you or your business are interested in learning how you can prevent an opioid overdose death in our community, free training is being offered by Doña Ana County Government Center. Call 575-525-5877 or email narcan@donaana.gov to schedule your training.

Together, we can turn the tide against overdose deaths.
