How Do You Treat an Abnormal Pap Smear?

An abnormal pap smear can include a wide range of results. Further diagnosis and treatment depends on the initial result, as well as your prior pap smear results. Your physician should follow the evidence-based guidelines of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) when determining further diagnostic and treatment procedures.

For low-grade abnormalities, your physician will recommend either continued routine screening, more frequent screening, or a colposcopy. A colposcopy may include a cervical biopsy, which is done in the office and does not require anesthesia. Further testing is dependent on the results of your colposcopy, and may include continued routine screening, more frequent screening, or possible treatment of the abnormal cells. If there is concern for cancer or inevitable progression to cancer, then you may referred to another physician, specifically a Gynecologic Oncologist.

It is important to follow the recommendations of your physician to ensure that any abnormalities are treated appropriately to prevent long-term complications.

What Is the Treatment for Uterine Fibroids?

There are a variety of treatment choices available for people with uterine fibroids. If your fibroids are small and you don't have symptoms, no treatment is indicated. However, if your fibroids are large or cause symptoms, your healthcare provider may recommend medications, non-invasive procedures, or surgical treatment. Medications are commonly prescribed to address these symptoms, and can include the following: hormonal birth control, contraceptive pills, vaginal ring or patch, IUD, depo provera, and a nexaplanon implant.

What Triggers Lichen Sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects people of any age, though it is more common after menopause. The condition causes patches of itchy or painful skin that appear thick, wrinkled, and white. In women, this condition usually affects the v***a and the skin around the a**s. While the exact cause of lichen sclerosus is unknown, research has linked it to environmental, hormonal, and immune-related factors. For example, there may be a genetic predisposition to lichen sclerosus that is triggered by injury or trauma to the affected areas. In other cases, lichen sclerosus can be caused by an autoimmune response, in which the body mistakenly attacks healthy cells.

Is the Wellness Exam the Same as the Pap Smear?

The wellness exam is not the same as the Pap smear because while it is common for women to receive a Pap smear as part of a wellness examination, it is only one component of the exam. Other tests and screenings, such as breast exams and blood tests, may also be included depending on the patient's age, medical history, and risk factors.

When should I start a workup for infertility?

When to start an infertility workup depends on various factors and should be determined on a case-by-case basis. Typically, recommendations are based on age. Patients under 35 are usually advised to wait for one year of trying to conceive before starting a workup. In contrast, patients over 35 are recommended to begin their evaluation after 6 months, and those over 40 or patients of any age with pre-existing conditions affecting their fertility should consider starting sooner.

What Is a Physical Breast Exam Called?

When a physical breast exam is performed by a health professional, it is called a clinical breast examination (CBE). This examination will involve the physician using their fingers to apply light, moderate, and firm pressure to feel the different layers of the breast tissue looking for any lumps, whether the lumps move within the tissue, or any hardened or thicker tissue, and if there is any discomfort or pain from the patient. The entire exam should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Why Does My Breast Hurt If I Press It?

There are several different potential causes for pain in the breast when pressure is applied, many of which will just occur naturally as a symptom of puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, but there are also several other reasons where the pain may be indicative of something that requires medical attention. Mastitis is a common cause of breast tenderness in those who are breastfeeding, as it is an inflammation of the breast tissue, and can typically be connected to a bacterial infection within a milk duct or blocked milk duct. Some medications come with a side effect of breast tenderness, including birth control pills, diuretics, and hypertension medications.

Which organ is affected by urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence directly affects the bladder, which is the organ responsible for storing urine. When the bladder is incapable of controlling the release of urine effectively, it leads to urinary incontinence. Different types of incontinence have varying effects on bladder function. For example, in stress incontinence, the bladder leaks under physical pressure or stress, while in urgency incontinence, the bladder suddenly expels urine without much warning.
