Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat facet-mediated neck or back pain, including pain that persists after injury or trauma.
Using imaging guidance, a specialized probe is positioned near the medial branch nerves that transmit pain signals from the facet joints. Controlled heat is then applied to disrupt these pain-transmitting nerves—without damaging the spine or surrounding structures.
In appropriately selected patients, pain relief can last approximately 6 to 12 months, and in some cases longer, as supported by multiple clinical studies. This duration reflects the time it takes for the targeted nerves to regenerate.
RFA is not intended for acute injury pain. It is considered when pain persists despite conservative treatment and when diagnostic blocks confirm the facet joints as the pain source.
Evaluation by a board-certified pain management physician is essential to determine whether RFA is an appropriate treatment option.
