We have lost another great one.
John F. Barnes passed on yesterday.
As surprised as I am (I feel 86yo old is too young to die), I know we don’t live forever. I’m so grateful that I had the chance to learn from him while he was here. He was still teaching seminars until about a year and a half ago, maybe? I saw him last, in June 2023 teaching the Cervical Thoracic class.

After an accident left me unable to walk for two months and in an Aspen collar for three, my body ached with trauma and tightness. My neck was so locked it barely moved, and the vertigo was a constant 10 once the collar was removed.

During a Myofascial Release session, gentle pressure is applied into an area of restriction, slowly, like sinking into soft clay. This is done without sliding on the skin, that's why I don't use lotion or oil and I ask that you come in with dry skin. If my hands are sliding on the skin, we are only releasing the elastin of the connective tissue, which gives a temporary result.
After about 2 minutes of sustained compression, the collagen adhesions begin to let go. Then I continue my pressure for 5-10 minutes or more, for each restriction, which allows the solidified ground substance to soften and begin 'rehydrating', allowing for more freedom of movement. Waiting for this change to occur, is key to giving a longer lasting result.

“Kat wasn’t just trimming the weeds, she was pulling them”! I had two life-long issues: (often extreme) pain and tightness in my left neck, that would occasionally get aggravated and lead to sleepless nights and headaches.
I also had an extremely tight right hip flexor, and lack of mobility there.  If I was sleeping on my back with one leg bent up in a “figure 4” position, it would pull on my hip and abdomen and hurt - plus I couldn’t get my leg anywhere close to flat.

I had tried massage therapy, foam rolling, PNF stretching, etc.  Was recommended to try MFR, by a friend which led me to Kat.

These photos give you an idea of what happens at your initial evaluation appointment. We go over your health history and I provide some fascia education.

Then I take a look at your posture and alignment, while you are standing. Everything looks different when you are lying down, I’m looking for tightness, pulls or restrictions through your system.

Here are several links to websites where Fascia is being discussed. There aren’t many clinical trials proving that MFR is effective as a treatment, due to every body’s fascial system being so different to begin with, and each one having its own, individual set of particular restrictions or patterns of tension, that the usual ‘clinical controlled trial’ isn’t possible.
However, the article listed below from CNN, does list a couple studies.

There are many books, written by Physical Therapists and other Myofascial Release Therapists who have gotten permission from their patients to share their success stories. So, the data is being collected, and shown, as this treatment becomes more mainstream. In addition, over the 50+ years that PT John F. Barnes has been practicing and teaching this modality, he says patients are healing and having improvement without being injured, since the treatment is so gentle.
