People also possess the power of cognitive empathy, the capacity to understand another's perspective. I can guess what you are likely thinking in any given situation.

Cognitive empathy is a perspective-taking process. If I see you get rejected for a promotion at work, I can put myself in your shoes. I can accurately guess what you are thinking and planning to do in response. This ability to mentalize or model the thoughts of others allows us to anticipate what is going to happen next in social situations.

Enjoying things when they’re good

Worrying about when “the other shoe will drop” will only steal your current joy. Students who predict getting a poor grade on an exam felt bad for days before receiving their results. Worse, their stressing didn’t diminish the disappointment they felt once they got their scores.

One underlying reason people worry is that on some level they assume it helps. Yet we need to accept that we can’t perfectly prepare for potential challenges. There are an infinite number of bad things that could possibly happen, although most are unlikely, and there is just no way a person can anticipate them all.

Keep in mind that we are notoriously bad at predicting how we will feel in a given situation, and things often go better than we imagine they will in moments of fear. People find they worry about everything bad that could possibly happen so that they won’t be taken off guard. What really bothers them is that although they do sometimes experience bad things, they are never the ones they thought about.

How does lab milk compare with other types of milk?

Until recently, milk alternatives have been completely plant-based.
These include almond, rice, coconut, and soy milk.
Their nutrients vary significantly between each type and even more so compared with cow’s milk.
For example, 1 cup, or 240 mL, of whole cow’s milk packs 7 grams of protein, 8 grams of fat, and 12 grams of carbs, while the same amount of unsweetened almond milk barely contains 3 grams of fat and 2 grams each of protein and carbs.
While fat and carb contents may differ among plant milks, all except soy milk are lacking in protein.
Further, many plant milks lack calcium and vitamin D unless the manufacturer adds these nutrients.
Conversely, lab milk is tailored to replicate the composition of carbs, fats, and high quality protein in cow’s milk.
In fact, Perfect Day’s flora-made protein contains beta lactoglobulin, cow milk’s major whey protein, identical to that of domesticated cows.

How is lab milk made?

Replicating milk’s proteins is a key element in lab-made dairy products.
This process relies on fermentation.
Companies like Perfect Day, which is one of the pioneers of lab milk, utilize Trichoderma reeseiyeast to convert plant sugar into whey and casein, two of milk’s main proteins.
This process is similar to how other yeasts ferment sugar into alcohol or leavened bread.
To do so, companies genetically modify the yeast and insert milk protein genes into its DNA.
Perfect Day calls their final product flora-made protein, though other companies may use bacteria, fungi, or other microflora instead of yeast.
The protein is then separated from the yeast and the remaining sugar.
Next, it’s filtered and dried to make a powder.
Later on, this protein powder is mixed with water, vitamins, minerals, and plant-based fats and sugars using the nutrient proportions in cow’s milk.
Note that while the yeast is a GMO a.k.a., genetically modified organism, the final product may be considered non-GMO because the protein is separated from the yeast during filtration.
