In Response to:
Washington Post: “So you want to give acupuncture a try. How do you pick a provider?” by Kevin Brasier and Washington Consumers’ Checkbook, October 4, 2021 at 7:00am EDT.
In his article dated 10/04/2021, Mr. Brasier gives too simplified a snapshot of acupuncture, research, and related health care policies. The piece improperly advises readers how to choose an acupuncturist. Why? Because Chinese medicine and Western medicine are utterly dissimilar: it is akin to hiring an electrician to fix a leaky faucet (competent contractor and professional, but in entirely different field).
Western medical physicians, certified by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture (ABMA) receive “zero hours” of training in Chinese medicine, complete only “300 hours of acupuncture education and 500 medical acupuncture treatments, “passing but one exam; hardly adequate to properly treat patients with acupuncture.
The more appropriate choice are National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) board-certified practitioners (educational requirements minimum 3 year master’s degree, 750 hours of Oriental medicine/acupuncture theory, 660 clinical hours, 450 hours of Western medicine, and 90 hours of counseling, communications, ethics and practice management for a total of 1905 hours; must pass 3 separate national board exams for certification and even more to become a full-on Oriental Medicine/herbal practitioner/2625 hours).
300 hours of training compared to 1905/2625 hours is no comparison and misleads the public into thinking Western physicians are as qualified as NCCAOM-certified practitioners to diagnose/administer complex acupuncture procedures to ailing patients.
Compare it to other complex medical training: 300 hours (vs. 1905/2625 hours) is vastly insufficient for even a basic knowledge of theory, let alone to learn/understand patient care.

The Wellman Clinic: Susan Wellman, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, successfully treating neck pain and stiffness with acupuncture and Chinese herbs since 2002. Acute and chronic neck pain and stiffness can be successfully treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine. The physical body is animated by energy, called Qi (Chee) that flows through every cell in the body via a complex system of channels, or meridians. When this smooth flow is disrupted or obstructed, pain and stiffness can occur. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs restore the smooth flow of Qi and pain and stiffness are relieved.
