Back strain from backpacks is normal, right?
No.
Studies show carrying a backpack can put a force thatโs 7.2 times the weight of the backpack on the spine! This increases to 11.6 times if hunched over.
Here are shopping tips:
๐ Roll it!: rolling backpacks are a surefire way to keep the weight and pressure off your back and on the ground.
๐ Fix your posture: the natural inclination is to lean forward to compensate for the weight but check yourself in a mirror โ and then stand up straight.
๐ Lose the load: kids should not carry more than 10 to 20 percent of their total body weight. For adults, no more than 15 to 20 percent.
๐ Check your straps: tighten the straps to ensure the weight is properly distributed. Padded straps also help as theyโre often wider than your typical backpack.
