🗣🎙 Nasal breathing requires a patent nasal passage AND the back of the tongue needs to be up making contact with the soft palate to direct the airflow in and out of the nose 👃

👅 tie ➡️ tongue down
Low 👅 tone ➡️ tongue down

They hyoid bone is a U shaped bone located in the anterior midline of the neck and is the only bone that does not articulate with other bones, it’s a floating bone.

Why do we need to understand this structure?!

The hyoid bone needs to be flexible for optimal function.

✔️ Flexibility is provided by the supra and infra-hyoid muscles.

✔️ Balance between these muscles is maintained by the efficient action of swallowing, breathing, speech, and posture.

Myofunctional Therapy helps retrain you to breathe through your nose. This increases the amount of oxygen that is absorbed into your cells, reduces allergies and asthma, and relaxes the jaw muscles among other benefits. Have questions? Just ask below 👇

Here’s why breathing through your mouth is not good for your health.

SLEEP ➡️ breathing through the mouth at night can impact the quality of your sleep which in turn can leave you fatigued and tired.

SNORING & SLEEP APNEA ➡️ Mouth breathing promotes low tongue posture, which can lead to snoring, sleep disordered breathing and sleep apnea.

LOW ENERGY ➡️ we get less oxygen when we breathe with our mouth. This will result in lowered energy levels.

DEHYDRATION ➡️ study has showed that the net water loss increased by 42% when the breathing mode was switched from nasal to oral. This explains why you experience dry mouth and want to drink more water.

POOR ORAL HEALTH ➡️ When you breathe through the mouth, you decrease saliva production. This changes the the pH balance in your mouth making it more acidic. Saliva works at neutralizing. Without adequate amounts of saliva It can lead to increased risk for tooth decay (cavities), gum disease, and halitosis (chronic bad breath).

I see this in my patients a lot. Have you looked at your tongue lately??
