Just like Ben, we try to always be learning, by challenging ourselves to really listen to our clients and their families. This was a good reminder!

At thirty, I had been supporting people with developmental and intellectual disabilities for nearly half my life. It was work I loved and thought I understood deeply. But Clive a 74 year old man who had spent all of his life in care, starting at the state institution, was about to teach me one of the most profound lessons of my career.

The large group home that Clive lived in was closing, and in just four weeks, he would be homeless. Clive had been wanting his own place for many years. But in our world of services these wishes are often only fulfilled when it meets the systems needs and this was one of those occasions.

At this point in my career I had helped many people to buy or rent their own homes and recruit their own supporters. The timeframe was tight, but our system lives on short notice. We had built good relationships with local landlords and within a couple of weeks he had found an apartment in an area he was familiar with. It wasn’t perfect, but it was his.

Next, we came to furnishing his home. A life of services predictably provided little more than a small collection of clothing. An emergency grant came through on the very day of the move the same day his care home shut its doors. While Clive went shopping with his new support worker I took a trip to IKEA to buy a bed.

Of course, I would have done this with Clive, but this was an emergency. Clive had too much to do. We’d looked online together, and I knew what he wanted and what his budget could handle a humble, white wooden bed that wouldn’t strain the grant.

I arrived at the apartment before Clive and went about assembling the bed. My hands were sore, scratched, and bruised, but I felt a sense of pride. When Clive walked in, he carried everything from his old life in a small holdall bag. His support worker followed with the beginnings of his new one - pots, pans, groceries. I excitedly beckoned Clive to his bedroom to show him my hard work.

Clive stood in the doorway, silent, his gaze fixed on the modest frame. I watched his face as emotions rippled across it. This wasn’t just a bed. For Clive, it symbolized something monumental: the end of a lifetime in systems and services and the start of something new.

Finally, he turned to me. His voice, though quiet, carried a depth I’ll never forget: β€œWhere’s my girlfriend going to sleep?”

His question hit me like a bolt of lightning. I didn’t know Clive and my assumptions were laid bare. His life of systems of services was far from over.

To me Clive was a 74 year old man with an intellectual disability, single, sexless. I’d spent years advocating for people to have full lives, including relationships, and yet I had unconsciously excluded Clive from that vision.

It was nearing midnight by the time I finished assembling the king-size bed he needed. My hands bore the marks of the work, but the deeper imprint was on my mind and heart. Clive had reminded me of something essential:

I thought I knew it all. I thought I knew what I was doing. And that is a very dangerous place to be.

Ben

Social Skills for Teens!

Welcome to ABC! Where we hope to help teens and young adults learn social skills so they can comfortably navigate school and work, AND make friendships, too. We are Lauren, a BCBA & CCSD high school teacher, and Natalia, an autism mom who also works in the ABA field. We saw a need for these services, so we decided to fill the gap by starting these teen groups.

We both love ABA, and the social skills groups we offer are using evidence-based ABA models.

We ALSO both love fun tips to keep teens interested and healthily occupied (between the two of us, we have two teens and two tweens). So we will post as many fun tips as we can find. :)

Message us! Say hi! We look forward to meeting you soon!
