A prosthetic contact lens is a painted or colored lens—soft, hard, or scleral—used to improve the appearance of an eye affected by injury or certain eye conditions. While not typically meant to improve vision, these lenses help mask abnormalities like corneal scars or iris defects and restore symmetry between the eyes.
Prosthetic contact lenses mainly improve the appearance of a damaged or distorted eye. However, they also help reduce light sensitivity, glare, or double vision in eyes with poor vision. Additionally, they can support eye health by maintaining a stable tear film when the cornea or tear system is compromised.
Fitting a prosthetic contact lens requires a custom process and may take time. Your eye doctor can help or refer you to a specialist.
