What can be done to improve social skills?
Play with your child to help develop joint attention, turn-taking, shared interests, cooperation, and appropriate play with toys.

Emotions: Help the child to understand and display their own emotions and to recognize these emotions in other people.

Empathy: Help the child to understand and recognize how other people are feeling in particular situations.

Social stories: These are stories that are used to teach children specific social skills that they may find difficult to understand or are confusing. The goal of the story is to increase the child’s understanding by describing in detail a specific situation and suggesting an appropriate social response.

Social skill groups: These are groups run with the express purpose of mastering social interaction with others.

Physical therapy is the perfect way to help children that suffer from genetic or developmental delays and disorders.

Motor Issues
Motor problems affecting oral motor development will be the next area we explore.
A child might have difficulty or exhibit premature movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, head, or other parts of the body. These motor challenges can result in immature oral motor skills.

There is a relationship between sensory perception and motor movement. The more sensory input received, the harder the muscles will work and the greater the impact on the motor pathways. We move to experience sensory input and sensory input influences movement. Participation in daily oral motor activities allows a child the opportunity to progress through the Dynamic Learning Circle to experience new movements of the head, lips, mouth, cheeks, and tongue.

When presenting an object for a child to explore using the mouth, offer it in a position that allows the child to move. Present the object near the mouth, close enough so that when the child moves independently, contact is made. The child, not the adult, makes the decision whether or not to repeat movements.

Development of Gross Motor Skills.

There are a number of essential abilities that must be present for a child to hone his or her gross motor skills. Without them, gross motor skills may be delayed or underdeveloped. Some of them include:

- Muscle strength/tone
- Balance
- Coordination
- Stability and posture
- Motor learning

If your child seems to be struggling with some of these skills, it could be a sign of a problem that requires intervention and treatment. Talk about your concerns with your doctor if you believe there might be a physical problem interfering with your child's gross motor skill development.

Sensory issues occur when a child has a difficult time receiving and responding to information from their senses. Children who have sensory issues may have an aversion to anything that triggers their senses, such as light, sound, touch, taste, or smell.

Common symptoms of sensory processing issues may include:

- hyperactivity
- frequently putting things in their mouth
- resisting hugs

Unfortunately, not a great deal is known about sensory issues or why some children experience them but not others.

If a child has difficulties with the attention they might:

- Not attend to a task when required/requested to do so.
- Miss details in instructions.
- Repeatedly makes the same mistakes (due to not learning from past attention).
- Be unable to listen to all of the information presented.
- Find it physically difficult to either calm down (as they are too physically active) or to ‘wake up’ as they appear sleepy and lethargic.
- Begins a task but then gets distracted by something else and then ‘forgets’ to complete what was asked of them.

What Is Visual Memory And Why Is It Important?

The ability to recall or remember the visual details of what you have seen is known as visual memory.

Remembering faces, sight words, and the appearance of a building you have only seen once, are all examples of using visual memory skills.

The ability to learn sight words is particularly dependent on visual memory skills.

Children with poor visual memory skills may struggle to:

- recognize numbers and letters
- remember sight words
- copy work from the board or a book, as they struggle to remember what they saw on the board and have to keep checking back

It is therefore really important for children to have lots of opportunities to develop their visual memory skills, and the activities on this page are suitable for preschool age and older.
