VA observes World Lung Cancer Day August 1 to raise awareness and magnify the need for more lung cancer research funding as it’s one of the deadliest cancers among Veterans. Screening is an effective way to catch lung cancer when it’s in the early stages and most treatable.

About 5,000 Veterans die of lung cancer every year, and Veterans have a HIGHER diagnosis RATE as compared to their civilian peers, making screening even more important for Veterans. More than 1 million Veterans are eligible for lung cancer screening. If you currently smoke, a very important way to prevent lung cancer is to quit.

Early cancer diagnoses can improve your chances of living longer with treatment.

VA Food and Nutrition Services and Whole Health Program Partner to Improve the Healthy Teaching Kitchen Facility.

VASNHS System Food and Nutrition Service held the Grand Opening for the Healthy Teaching Kitchen on July 31, 2025 with a newly renovated space for greater Veteran accommodation.

The newly renovated space was a shared vision of Whole Health, Charlene Degen, and Food and Nutrition Manager, Nancy Munoz, RD, Healthy Teaching Kitchen Manager, Monica McGaha, RD. This collaboration helps the VA meet class instruction for nutrition as one of the main components in Whole Health.

Veterans and staff were in attendance of the grand opening to try several of the healthy recipes produced in the new kitchen. Kit Fung Leung whipped up a colorful Quinoa Salad, Tropical Smoothie, and a chickpea and chocolate bar from the National Nutrition Cookbook.

Making healthy food choices is the #1 thing you can do for your health. Learning how to cook can be a key step towards getting healthier foods on your plate. The Healthy Teaching Kitchen (HTK) program provides Veterans with nutrition knowledge, cooking skills, and guided practice to build confidence in cooking at home with healthy, minimally processed foods.

VA facilities across the country offer Healthy Teaching Kitchen (HTK) programs which teach Veterans and their support persons about food, nutrition and how to prepare and store balanced, healthy dishes. Classes are open to VA-enrolled Veterans and a “plus one” if desired– this can be a partner, family member, caretaker or anyone involved in helping you purchase and prepare food.

To find out if your facility has an HTK program, contact your PACT dietitian/nutritionist today!”
