Heading Back to School? Let’s Check In—Mind & Heart

As school season begins, it’s easy to focus on supplies and schedules. But what about how students feel? Back-to-school can spark anxiety—especially social anxiety or adjustment stress. Dr. Mandie Svatek, Pediatric Professor at UT Health San Antonio, reminds us that nearly 20% of children ages 3–17 experience mental, emotional, or behavioral challenges.

Here’s how to support them:
• Start conversations early — Ask open-ended questions: “How are you feeling about going back?”
• Validate their emotions — Remind them: It’s normal to feel anxious or uncertain.
• Be proactive — Notice mood changes or tension. Reach out for help early if needed.

Let’s make emotional well-being just as important as academic prep this year. 💙

Supporting a teen or young adult through emotional challenges isn’t easy.

When they’re overwhelmed, try suggesting healthy ways to cope, like creating art, journaling, staying active, or talking to someone they trust.

These small steps can help build resilience, ease anxiety, and strengthen self-awareness over time.

This quote reminds us that what we see on the outside is only a fraction of a person’s inner experience.

Much of our emotional world, like trauma, anxiety, or unspoken fears, remains hidden, yet deeply influences how we think, feel, and behave. Understanding this is key to compassion and healing.

AI chat tools are showing up more often in mental health spaces, but are they helpful or potentially harmful?

Dr. Timothy Jeider, M.D., co-founder of Nevada Mental Health, explores key concerns:
- AI can offer quick responses, but often lacks nuance and empathy
- Misdiagnosis and misinformation can derail proper care
- True healing requires human connection and clinical insight

Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

When you care for your mental, emotional, and physical health, you build the resilience to manage stress, set healthy boundaries, and show up fully for yourself and others.

Daily Habits for Mental Health: New Research to Back Them Up

New research shows that simple behaviors done consistently, like physical activity each day, time in a natural environment, social connection, and contributing to other people's well-being, have clear benefits for mental health.

Results of a large-scale study suggest that the more often people participated in these protective behaviors, the greater the mental health benefits were. Even minor changes, such as chatting with their friends or practicing mindfulness, helped significantly with participants' mental well-being.
