The time change can be tough on little sleepers and their families. ⏰💤

Adjusting to daylight saving time can take a few days, especially for young children. Focusing on healthy sleep routines can help kids transition more smoothly and feel rested for learning and play.

Here are a few simple ways to help children adjust:
• Keep consistent bedtimes and wake-up times, even on weekends
• Create a calming bedtime routine like reading or quiet play
• Limit screen time before bed to help bodies wind down
• Get plenty of daytime movement and natural light
• Be patient as children adjust. Small changes can take time

Quality sleep supports children’s growth, learning, mood, and overall well-being. With consistency and support, families can help children settle into healthy routines and start each day ready to learn.

Maria Montessori’s work continues to shape early childhood education and how we support young learners today.

An Italian physician and educator, Montessori transformed early learning by emphasizing exploration, independence, and hands-on experiences. Her child-centered approach encouraged educators to respect each child’s unique pace of development while creating supportive and engaging learning environments.

Many practices used in early learning classrooms today, including play-based learning and choice-driven activities, reflect principles inspired by Montessori’s work. Her legacy continues to help children build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Nevada Reading Week was a joyful celebration of stories, imagination, and learning. Children and educators came together to explore books, build early literacy skills, and share the excitement that reading brings.

One of the featured stories was The Cat in the Hat. After reading together, our Infant and Toddler classrooms got creative by making their own special hats inspired by the story, infant and toddler style. These hands-on activities help bring books to life while encouraging creativity, fine motor development, and early language skills.

Throughout the week, children participated in reading and reading-themed activities that made learning engaging while strengthening comprehension and imagination. These early literacy experiences help lay the foundation for future academic success and lifelong learning.

At Sunrise Children’s Foundation, we are committed to nurturing a love of reading every day through meaningful classroom experiences that help children grow into confident learners.

Thank you to our educators who helped make Nevada Reading Week a great success. Together, we are building brighter futures, one story at a time.

Did you know hearing and vision screenings play an important role in early learning success? 👂👁️

Early screenings can help identify concerns before they impact a child’s development, communication, and classroom experience.

Thanks to our amazing community partners like UNLV Dental, Liberty Dental Plan, Pearle Vision, Lions Club, Hope Christian Health Center, Pro-Health Wellness Group, and Solutions of Change, families are able to receive free vision, hearing, dental, and wellness screenings all in one place, such as during our Moving Up Celebration at the beginning of the year.

When children receive support early, families and educators can work together to provide the right resources, accommodations, and services that help children build confidence and fully engage in learning and play.

Routine screenings help ensure children can hear, see, connect, and thrive as they grow, creating a strong foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.

Strong bodies and healthy habits play an important role in early childhood development. 💪

Physical Development and Health is one of the key early childhood learning domains. It focuses on how children grow, move, and learn to care for their overall well-being, including gross and fine motor skills, nutrition, healthy routines, and safe environments that support everyday learning.

At SCF, we create active, engaging learning spaces where children can move, explore, and build coordination through age-appropriate play. Children enjoy slides, playhouses, age-appropriate plastic balls, and plenty of room to run and roam, all designed to encourage movement and exploration in a safe environment.

Our educators intentionally plan activities that strengthen muscles, encourage healthy habits, and promote wellness through movement, nutrition education, and safe practices.

By supporting physical development early, we help children build strength, confidence, and lifelong habits that support success in school and beyond.

As we continue honoring Black History Month, we recognize the lasting impact Black leaders have had on child nutrition and family well-being.

Innovators like George Washington Carver advanced agricultural science by promoting nutrient-dense crops such as sweet potatoes, peanuts, and legumes, foods still found in child nutrition programs today.

Black nutritionists and public health advocates also championed affordable, culturally familiar foods. Traditional African and African American foodways including leafy greens, beans, squash, okra, and yams are rich in vitamins, fiber, and minerals and align closely with modern childhood nutrition guidance.

These contributions helped shape today’s school meal programs, WIC nutrition education, and family-centered wellness approaches.

One of the Early Childhood Education domains is Social and Emotional Development, and it plays a key role in how children learn, grow, and connect with others.

This domain focuses on helping children understand and express their emotions, build positive relationships, and develop skills like empathy, confidence, and self-regulation. Through our Early Head Start services, we support social and emotional development by creating safe, nurturing environments where children feel supported, respected, and valued.

Our educators model kindness, encourage cooperation, and help children navigate big feelings in age-appropriate ways. These everyday interactions help children build trust and strong social skills that support lifelong learning.

Families can help support this domain at home, too. Here are a few simple ways to practice social and emotional development together:

👂 Practice active listening and acknowledge feelings
💬 Use kind and respectful words
🌟 Be a positive role model during challenging moments
🤝 Encourage sharing, turn-taking, and empathy
😊 Talk about emotions and name them together

When families and educators work together, children gain the tools they need to build healthy relationships and grow with confidence.

Happy Music Monday! 🎶

This week, we’re sharing a simple reminder that sometimes all it takes is a few minutes of music to help your little ones get the wiggles out. Putting on a favorite song and letting kids move their bodies is an easy way to reset during the day and something we love to build into our regular routine.

Music and movement help children release energy, regulate emotions, and relax their bodies. Research shows that music can help reduce stress, support emotional regulation, and improve mood, especially for young children who are still learning how to express big feelings. Moving to music also supports physical development, coordination, and overall well being.

A short music break can make a big difference for everyone. 💛
