❗️Throwback Post❗️A look back at the JHU Depression & Creativity Symposium

🧠 If you're Bipolar or have 📚 studied mood disorders, then you know of Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison. You've likely read her book, "An Unquiet Mind," and know that she's famously open about her own struggles with bipolar disorder.

This makes her undeniably compelling. Weaving her experiences into her research and work as a Professor Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co–director of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center.

Years ago, she was part of a symposium at JHU. Discussion focused on the 👉 impact of depression and its influence on creativity. 👈

💡 As expected, the presentation was thought-provoking. A look into the relationship between writing and art, using examples of female poets, Sylvia Plath, and Virginia Woolf led into a wide-ranging dialogue about mental health.

❓️DO MEDICAL CANNABIS LAWS HAVE AN IMPACT ON UNDERAGE DRINKING?

📚 Elara practitioner, Greg Hard, co-authored a study, published in November 2022, that looked for a correlation in states with and without Medical Cannabis Laws (MCLs) and Adolescent Alcohol Use Initiation.

💡 The study found that "the likelihood of alcohol initiation among adolescents is ⬆️ higher in states without MCLs compared to those with MCLs. These data support a substitutive effect, with❗adolescents potentially substituting alcohol for cannabis."❗

📰 ENCOURAGING NEWS ON DEPRESSION
Recent analysis suggests a few reasons to be optimistic on the treatment of depression.

📚 The study considered web surveys taken by 96,000 US students throughout 133 campuses during the 2021-22 school year. This research is conducted annually.

🌟 STUDENTS ARE GETTING HELP AND DRINKING LESS 🌟
- Data reflected that a record amount of students reported having one or more therapy sessions over the course of one year.
- Another milestone of the study is that 54% of participants reported no alcohol use in the two weeks prior to taking the survey.

SOCIAL ANXIETY is said to be on the rise. While many think that technology and social media are partly to blame, we also just have more data now. 🤔

📚 A 2020 self-reported study of 7000 individuals from seven countries with different socioeconomic differences shed some light into social anxiety in young people.

Authors Philip Jeffries and Michael Ungar found that ❗58%❗of participants in the US reported experiencing symptoms, which was the highest rate among the countries. The age group of the participants ranged from 16-29 years old.

In our practice we see many patients with ADHD and/or Bipolar diagnoses. The illnesses have seemingly similar symptoms but as you can see in the diagram, specific differences have been pinpointed.

Did you know?
👉 Bipolar disorder often co-occurs with ADHD in adults, with some estimates putting it as high as 20%.
👉 The likelihood of a delayed diagnosis is particularly high for patients with both bipolar disorder plus ADHD, making an accurate and evidence-based assessment all the more important.
