Perimenopause is a natural transition in a woman’s life, yet many of us are never fully educated about the changes that can occur during this stage. The slides above highlight some common experiences and evidence-based lifestyle strategies that may support sleep and overall wellness.

This post is intended for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are experiencing symptoms that affect your sleep, mood, or daily functioning, please consult with your healthcare provider or a qualified medical professional.

Some topics you may consider discussing with your doctor include:

• sleep disturbances or insomnia
• hormonal changes during perimenopause
• lifestyle approaches that support sleep and stress regulation
• treatment options such as behavioral sleep strategies or hormone therapy when appropriate

Every woman’s experience is different, and working with your healthcare provider can help determine what support is best for you.

If you’re navigating this stage of life too, know that you’re not alone. Conversations like this help us learn, support one another, and advocate for our health.

✨ Mental Health Fact 🧠

Did you know Research shows that adult grandchildren who report receiving affection and emotional support from their grandmothers are more likely to engage in positive health behaviors and experience stronger overall well being in adulthood. These supportive bonds are associated with protective factors that contribute to lower stress and better emotional health across the lifespan (Salazar, Khandelwal, & Castillo, 2022).

In many African American families, grandmothers often serve as foundational sources of stability, guidance, and intergenerational connection, which can further strengthen resilience and psychological well being into adulthood.

🖊 Free Therapeutic Activity

Take 10 to 15 minutes today and try this:

• Journal about one lesson, saying, or value your grandmother or grandparent poured into you.
• Write about a time their presence made you feel safe, seen, or supported.
• Ask yourself, how is that lesson still guiding me today?

If your grandparents are still here, consider reaching out with a phone call, a voice note, or a simple thank you.

If they are no longer here, reflection can be a powerful grounding tool. Recall their words. Remember their laughter. Sit with their wisdom. The memories and values they planted can still steady you in some of your toughest spaces.

Sometimes healing is remembering who first made us feel loved.

It takes a village.

I do not build alone.

As we begin planning Year 5 of the Men’s Health and Wellness Conference (June), I am deeply grateful for the men who continue to walk this journey with me and help steward what God has entrusted us with.

And now, as I step into building our first Free Mental Health and Wellness Conference for Women (May), I am incredibly grateful for the faces God has revealed, the doors He has opened, and the hearts He has aligned.

To host conferences that create intentional, educational spaces where men and women can receive support, be vulnerable, and leave with practical tools they can implement in their daily lives.

To provide front row access to medical professionals, mental health clinicians, spiritual leaders, and holistic practitioners in an intentional, learning centered, culturally responsive, stigma free, and compassionate space.

This is more than a conference for me.

This is community work.
This is a village growing.
This is bridging gaps.
This is providing access!

And I am truly grateful.

In the tradition of the Maasai people of East Africa, a common greeting asks, Kasserian Ingera? which means, How are the children?

This is not a casual question. It reflects the high value placed on the well being of children within the community.

The expected response, All the children are well, signifies more than safety. It indicates that the village is functioning as it should. That the elders are guiding with wisdom. That the adults are protecting. That the community’s priorities are aligned toward safeguarding its future.

Among the Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania, children are not seen as belonging only to individual families, but to the community as a whole. Their well being reflects the overall health, stability, and moral direction of the society.

So when someone asks, How are the children? they are really asking:

Is the community safe?
Are we honoring our responsibilities?
Are we protecting what matters most?

The response, All the children are well, becomes both a statement and a standard.

It serves as a reminder that the condition of the children is a reflection of the condition of us all.

Mental Health Awareness Game vs. Wyoming | 2/11 🏀💚

Our UNLV mental and behavioral health providers and training programs were recognized at the game on 2/11, a beautiful reminder that the work happening in our classrooms, clinics, and communities matters!

Grateful to stand alongside my colleagues who are expanding access to care, integrating care across settings, and preparing the next generation of providers to serve with compassion, cultural humility, and clinical excellence!

Thank you, , for shining a light on mental health and for the recognition.

It takes a village. ❤️🤍

Our mental and behavioral health providers and training programs were recognized at the Lady Rebels basketball game on February 11. The evening highlighted the importance of mental health in our community. We are grateful to be part of a university that elevates this work on and off the court. And of course, we loved cheering on our incredibly talented Lady Rebels! 🏀

Thank you to everyone who continues to champion mental health at UNLV.

Safety is the state of being protected from harm or threat and experiencing a sense of stability, trust, and freedom from fear.

In the context of the nervous system, safety means the body perceives that it is not in danger and does not need to stay in survival mode, allowing for rest, connection, and regulation.
💚
The nervous system is the body’s safety system. It is constantly asking, “Am I safe, or do I need to protect myself?”

When it does not feel safe, the body shifts into survival mode:
• fight
• flight
• freeze
• shut down

That is not weakness.
That is biology.

A safe nervous system is supported by:
• consistency and predictability
• emotional safety
• rest
• environments where you are not always on guard

Simple ways to support your nervous system:
• slow your body down
• practice gentle breathing
• create routines your body can rely on
• set boundaries without guilt
• choose spaces and relationships where you feel seen, supported and respected!
