June 11th - King Kamehameha Day

On December 22, 1871, King Kamehameha V proclaimed a national holiday to honor and celebrate his grandfather and the father of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Originally, the people of Hawai‘i wanted to mark the legacy of Lot Kapūaiwa (Kamehameha V) on his birthday, December 11. Being the humble chief that he was, he opted to honor his grandfather instead and pushed the holiday as far away from his (Lot’s) birthday as possible, hence the arbitrary date of June 11. Thus, June 11, 1872, was the very first Kamehameha Day holiday ever celebrated

Definitely a hard one, especially if ego & fear are your weak points. Folks use this as a means to get at you.

Once we can acknowledge that we project our own insecurities on others and we are aware of its negative effects and impacts, we can then see how others operate as well. Even if the content is absolutely personalized, not taking it personal is next level.

Buuuuttt…..there is the difference between one who reflects and takes accountability and a narcissist who just simply doesn’t think they ever do anything wrong. That’s the fine line.

Not taking it personally and then by means of transaction you start reflect (not inner blame or project) but by simply observing how you feel emotionally & mentally or how it hurts physically, can help reveal some radical truths. This then can lead to an action, solution, or a revelation for shifts and change…especially if you didn’t mean to hurt another.

Or simply reflect and acknowledge….thats theirs and. Or yours and move on with your life. Either way the mana is back in your court.

The majority of one person’s reality plays out more in their head than is actually happening in physical reality. The projections of that can adversely affect how one moves next and sadly, it affects others.

There was a point in which we tested this theory. I was in my twenties when I had my first training. A group of folks were talking and judging me. It made me go inward, i was vengeful back then and i would fight fire with fire to win! So I’d talk mad ish back. I’d be very hurtful. In my “training” it was to do the opposite of what I had always done.

So instead of being vengeful, I went into the space as if no one was talking about me or as if only good was being said. I stayed positive and didn’t allow anyone to phase me. I got out of my way and head.

As time passed and I got to know people more and had more time to talk, I found out what happened. All of what I had assumed was false. It was a narrative in my head that could have played out differently had I responded negatively.

You see, the mind plays tricks on you. It’s the biggest troublemaker you can have, especially if you believe it’s every thought. Yes we do it to ourselves……so breathing, observing, being aware can make all the difference and save yourself and others hurt and stress.

On June 4, 1884, over 30 ladies responded to a request by Queen Kapiʻolani for a meeting with her at ʻIolani Palace.

She gave a short address in ʻOlelo Hawaiʻi, which was translated by Colonel Iaukea.

According to the Pacific Commercial Advertiser: “She told of the sad condition of the poor lepers, who were in need of many things not provided by law, and appealed to the sympathy and aid of those present.”

The ladies agreed to give a benefit garden party on the Palace grounds. Committees were formed and responsibilities assigned. At their second meeting on June 10, the committee decided to hold the event on June 26.

Duke's on Tuesdays!

Aloha friends! We just wanted to say thank you to those who join us at our gigs on Oahu. We truly appreciate all the aloha.

For those who are planning to visit us at Duke's Waikiki, here is some things we wanted to share with you before your visit!

We perform on Tuesdays from 7pm-9:30pm. Duke's is always packed so we recommend coming a bit earlier to grab a table. The stage that we perform on is outside and you will need to talk to a host to be seated.

Unfortunately, we can not save tables at this particular venue. Waikiki is always busy- especially at the time we perform. On that note, be prepared for a waitlist. Large groups tend to be seated in our area.

We are very fortunate to be performing at this iconic location and would love for you to have a great experience! Hope to catch you at Duke's on Tuesday!
