Last week, the Summerlin Hospital cardiovascular surgery team successfully performed its first Impella 5.5 heart pump implantation, marking a new advancement in providing sophisticated cardiovascular care to our community.

The Impella 5.5 is a next-generation mechanical circulatory support device designed to assist the heart in pumping blood into patients experiencing severe heart failure or cardiogenic shock.

Our dietitians provide comprehensive nutrition assessments, diagnose and treat malnutrition, manage complex nutrition support therapies, and provide individualized education on therapeutic diets.

Last week marked a major milestone for cardiovascular care at Summerlin Hospital. Our Cardiac Cath Lab team successfully performed the hospital's first implant of the Abbott Navitor valve during a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure. This minimally invasive, life-changing treatment offers a new option for patients with severe aortic stenosis. TAVI is an advanced structural heart procedure that allows physicians to replace a diseased heart valve without traditional open-heart surgery.

Summerlin Hospital is dedicated to advancing structural heart care services so patients in Southern Nevada can receive complex treatment close to home.

Congratulations to Angelina I, Emergency Department, who recently received our Service Excellence award! She received several nominations celebrating her teamwork, professionalism, kindness and compassion. Her colleagues shared:

“I wanted to take a moment to recognize Angelina Iniguez, who has demonstrated amazing teamwork, professionalism, and compassion in the ER. Her work ethic stands out every shift that I have worked with her - she is proactive, reliable, takes initiative, and always willing to step in without hesitation, especially during busy and stressful moments.

“Angelina treats every patient with genuine kindness and respect, and her calm, steady presence makes a noticeable difference in the flow of our department. She anticipates needs before being asked, supports the nurses without being prompted, and maintains a positive attitude. It is clear that she takes great pride in her role and it directly impacts the quality of care we deliver.

"We are delighted to announce South Summerlin Primary Care, part of Valley Health Physician Alliance, is now open for patient care – and the first patient was our Chief Nursing Officer, Crystal Gray! Fortunately, she was quickly treated and back to work in the blink of an eye!

Located in the same building as the ER at South Summerlin, the primary care office offers a variety of services, including routine exams, treatment of common illnesses, and preventive care needs. The office, located at 10290 W. Flamingo Road, Suite 105, is open from 7 am to 4 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 8 to 5 pm on Wednesdays. Currently, patients are seen by Melissa Jarusiri, MSN, APRN, FNP-C. To make an appointment, please call 702-329-1156. Walk-ins are also welcome at this time!

Last week, some of the world’s most respected robotic urologic surgeons gathered to watch live surgeries being performed at Summerlin Hospital.

As part of the 2026 NARUS Symposium, physicians from across the country observed, shared techniques, and discussed the future of robotic urology in real time- case by case, decision by decision.

It was an extraordinary opportunity for collaboration and education, and a proud moment for our hospital and community.

As Heart Month comes to a close, we are sending a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Adrian Mercado, an interventional cardiologist with Heart Center of Nevada and Medical Director of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at Summerlin Hospital.

Dr. Mercado served as a guest speaker at our Heart Smart Showcase earlier this month and received rave reviews. He also found time to speak with residents at Sun Shadows Community Center in Sun City Summerlin Community Association, discussing insights on heart health, recovery after cardiac events and how cardiopulmonary rehabilitation can help patients safely return to the activities they love.

We always enjoy connecting with our neighbors and continue our mission of improving heart health across our community!

🌟 Huge congratulations to Gina Lewis, Summerlin Hospital’s Human Resources Director, on being honored as the third recipient of the Dr. Wydell L. Williams Black Excellence in Healthcare Award!

The Valley Health System Education Training Center hosted a beautiful luncheon celebrating Black excellence in healthcare, complete with cultural displays, historical highlights, and heartfelt tributes.

This award honors the legacy of Dr. Wydell L. Williams — a trailblazing surgeon known for his compassion, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to equitable care. Gina embodies those same qualities through more than three decades of leadership, empowering others with authenticity, integrity and purpose.

Her message to the group said it best:
“Every interaction we have with people tells a story and has impact. Look for ways to cultivate meaningful conversations and opportunities to encourage someone.”
