Beat the Heart Attack Gene by Bradley Baile, MD and Amy Doneen, ARNP

Although heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, most people think that by watching their blood pressure and cholesterol they will be safe from experiencing heart disease. The authors explain the three primary genetic types of cholesterol profiles, and provide treatment plans for each. The book includes quizzes for readers to identify their cholesterol profile and provide preventive strategies for avoiding heart disease.

In 1959, scientists placed pigs in hyperbaric chambers, removing every trace of their blood and replacing it with saline solution. What unfolded was remarkable- the pigs not only survived but thrived due to the infusion of oxygen at a pressure of 3.0 PO2. The only visible difference was their pale complexion due to the absence of hemoglobin. Once the pigs were reinfused with their own blood and returned to the surface pressure, they lived happily ever after. This animal study shook the foundations of understanding. It revealed how under hyperbaric conditions, oxygen could dissolve directly into blood plasma, bypassing the need for RBC in hyperbaric environment.

When the Cunningham Sanitarium was in use, very little was known about the physiology of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. As a result, the AMA was critical of its benefits which eventually led to its closure.

Today research is revealing many positive physiological effect of HBOT. Below are listed a few of the scientifically proven benefits:

Vasoconstriction – to control edema. Even though there is less blood flow the O2 in plasma increases oxygenation decreasing inflammation that contributes to edema.

Increased oxygen perfusion

Neovascularization - After 20 hours the body will start to regrown microcirculation.

Stem Cells Release- Stem cells play a crucial role in repairing damaged tissues by differentiating into specialized cells that can replace lost or damaged tissue.

Mitochondria adaptations- With HBOT mitochondria will grow and get larger increasing energy output.
Immune system adaptations- There is an increase in WBCs and improved microbiome

Natural antibiotic- HBOT is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in low-oxygen environments.

Natural anti-inflammatory- Inflammatory markers are decreased.

Given the above history, we see that the field of hyperbaric therapy is in it infancy. In the past five to ten years, interest has shifted from FDA-approved life threatening indications to ‘off label’ uses which target chronic issues that affect patient’s quality of life and functionality.

“Timken’s Tank” was named after its benefactor, the “Baron of bearings” tycoon Henry H. Timken who bankrolled the $1,000,000 to build it. This unusual sphere was an early hospital. The monstrous steel ball was the pinnacle of over a decade of work by Dr. Orville Cunningham, one of the pioneers of , but the idea of hyperbarics was much older.

In the 1880s, while constructing the Brooklyn Bridge, over 100 workers fell ill with a crippling “Caisson Disease” named for the high pressure underwater chambers they worked in to excavate the foundation of the bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge’s caissons were large, bottomless, water tight, wooden boxes that were used to create the bridge’s foundations. They were towed into position in the East river and sunk to the riverbed. Compressed air was pumped into the caissons to keep water out, thus creating a dry workspace. Workers, often referred to as “sandhogs,” entered the caissons through air locks and dug away the riverbed muck an soil to reach bedrock. Once the work was done the caissons were filled with concrete becoming the bridge’s foundation.

With the increasing use of these caissons, an illness began to afflict the workers, earning the name caisson’s disease. After completing their shifts and resurfacing, these workers experienced dizzy spells, breathing difficulties and sharp pains in the head, joints and abdomen. This condition gained further notoriety during the construction of the New York’s subways as workers on the projects coined the name that remains in use today: the bends. It stems from the workers’ bent-over posture in excruciating pain as they resurfaced.

In 1878, Paul Bert, a French physiologist realized that breathing air under immense pressure infused the blood and tissues with nitrogen. When a worker emerged from the depths of the caisson back to the surface, the nitrogen created bubbles that coursed through the body culminating in pain, paralysis or even death.

It was during the construction of the subway tunnel under the Hudson river in 1879 that a hyperbaric recompression chamber came into use to ensure the safe return to the surface of those who toiled in the depths.

How to Make a Killing: Blood, Death and Dollars in American Medicine

Author Tom Meuller dives in to the dialysis business that has boomed in America since the 1960s when the kidney became the first organ to be replaced with a machine. Since then, Congress has opened the floodgates of Medicaid funding for Big Dialysis, leading to a web of corporate greed disproportionately effecting Black and Latino populations. This dive in to one aspect of for-profit medicine is an important reflection of our broken healthcare system which places profits, not patients, at the center.

How Vitamin D and UV Light Boost Health

It was not until epidemiologists at Johns Hopkins University in 1980 discovered that vitamin D was responsible at least in part for these effects. As a result of this discovery, vitamin D became the ‘flavor of the day’ with most doctors testing and treating for this vitamin. It was generally believed that vitamin D deficiency caused cancer, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases.

In 2010, Robyn Lucas, an epidemiologist at the Australian National University, found signs of sunlight’s prevention everywhere. For example, people with the most sun damage on the back of the hand- a particularly accurate reflection of lifetime sun exposure – have just one-third the rate of MS compared with those with less. And kids who spent less than 30 minutes a day outside had five times the risk of MS compared with those who averaged more than an hour outside.

As it turns out, Vitamin D is only part of the benefit of sunlight. Immunologist Scott Byrne, of the University of Sydney, recently discovered six novel lipids that are produced by the skin in response to UV light and sent to lymph nodes. There they signal T cells- the powerful immune warriors that get out of control in people with MS and attack the nervous system- to stay put and stop proliferating.

“How can I summarize a miracle in so few words? Well, this is our story:

On May 9, 2014 my son Andrew was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). At the end of May we brought him home unable to walk properly, and partially blind and deaf. He was Just 29 years old. That day my struggle started, “What do I do now?” Our next appointment with a neurologist was scheduled for August, 4 months away! A dear friend suggested that I give Dr. Pfau a call, so I did. I recall our appointment with him for the first time, his calm voice, and his reassurance that we will figure this “thing out”. I cried all the way home. I also remember him telling my son that he was after a cure for him and not just palliation of his symptoms.

Fast forward to November 2014, my son is doing wonderfully, most of the symptoms are gone, spinal and brain lesions have either faded away, or are simply gone. The neurologists were baffled as to how he had improved without any pharmaceuticals. As I unsuccessfully tried to explain to them how I credited the treatments he received at the Renaissance Health Centre to his amazing recovery, they dismissed me as ‘not being realistic.’ “

Neurologists will tell their MS patients that it is an incurable disease and all they can hope to do is slow down the progression. My experience in treating MS over the last 40 years has been that if we can start treatment within the first 2 years we can obtain remission.

I saw Andrew’s mom a couple of months ago and she reported that Andrew continues to be well. What appears to be a miracle in Andrew’s healing was in fact his body’s miraculous ability to heal – an innate ability all of our bodies have. Andrew was treated with homeopathy, neutraceuticals and IV ozone.

Several years ago Sarah, who was in her late 30’s developed numbness and an intolerable burning, needle like pains in her feet as a result of a series of chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. The pain had progressed to the point where the most she could walk was just 3 blocks.

Unfortunately, the only thing her doctor could recommend was Duloxetine a medication typically used to treat depression. Not only did this medication not work but it gave her headaches and insomnia. Out of desperation she wanted to know what alternative medicine had to offer.

What Sarah was experiencing was chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). This is a common side effect of cancer treatment that causes nerve damage leading to symptoms of numbness, tingling, and pain, most often in the hands and feet. Unfortunately, this is a common side effect, affecting 30%-40% of patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Sometimes described as “chemo feet” and “chemo hands,” it usually has a sock-and-glove pattern of numbness, tingling, burning or a pins-and-needles sensation. For some it can even affect fine motor skills that make it difficult to pick up small objects like a button or needle.

The chemo drugs that commonly have this side effect are platinum-base (like oxaliplatin), taxanes (like docetaxel), and vinca alkaloids (like vincristine).
I explained to Sarah that the chemo therapy had damaged the small blood vessels of her nerves. This in turn resulted in disruption of the surrounding sheaths that protects the nerves. I told Sarah that there was a natural intravenous therapy that I have used successfully for not only CIPN but also other similar neuropathies. The therapy was Alpha Lipoic acid –ALA—an amazing substance that the medical communities had ignored for decades.….

Children – security, self-confidence, love, and see the future with sparkling eyes. Dream huge dreams. The world at their fingertips.

Children - shouting. Heated arguments. Hitting. Smacking. Slapping. Raised voices. Blood. Choking. Physical molestation. Fear - unable to make heads or

tails. Unable to understand. Unable to help or be helped. Anger. Frustration. Guilt. I am alone. I am not worthy. No rescue. Nobody cares. Children try to handle the situation the best they can, driven by the will to survive. Right or wrong loses precedence.
Dealing with your Inner Child means knowing that you are safe and can no longer be hurt by the past, involves combining physical activity with a calm state of mind and maturity—trusting the subconscious to do its best job.

“I want to heal, I don’t want to be anxious, I’m fighting to feel good. I wake up feeling worried, anxious, and with impending doom, hyperventilating every morning. I’m losing everyone around me and those I love, I’m scared.” – AL (name changed for confidentiality)
Having lost her mother at 13 and mentally stuck in that moment till present, talk therapy, psychology, and other treatments failed, until finally, at age 14, she was placed on hormonal therapy to control mood swings.
After 14 days, learning to calm her mind, feeling the truth of her affirmations, acknowledging the underlying emotion – AL applied all tools and began her transformation – letting go of negative emotions in a healthy way, which allowed us to regress back to the ISE (Initial Sensitizing Event) - the painful night she lost her mother. CPRM protocol was applied, guiding young AL to her mother’s bed and being able to curl up beside Mom and have her last conversation, kept within for over 10 years. Psychic Cord – AL once again heard her mother’s voice, felt her mother’s presence, and felt the connection of motherly love.
Day 21 - she blossomed into a beautiful, radiant, confident young woman. Waking up each day kissing the sunlight, hugging her dog “Honey,” and valuing her supportive relationship with her significant other, who never fails to repeat her affirmations to her when he notices she needs to hear them the most.

Our Story

Terry Pfau D.O., H.M.D. received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. His internship was completed the following year at Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center. He received his board certified in Neuromuscular Medicine in 2006.

While in medical school it was his 5-year-old daughter’s experience with psoriasis that sparked his interest in Alternative Medicine. In an attempt to help her, she was taken to several dermatologists who only prescribed stronger and stronger topical steroids.

Although the medication gave temporary relief, she could not be left on them indefinitely. On taking her off the medications the psoriasis would come back even worse. Out of desperation, she was taken to a physician in Kansas City who practiced homeopathy. Almost immediately she began to see improvement and within a month the skin lesion had cleared.

Over the last 32 years, Dr Pfau has sought out training from some of the best physicians in the alternative medical field. He is a graduate of the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy, the U.C.L.A Medical Acupuncture for Physicians Course, and Maharishi Ayurvedic Medicine Course for Physicians. He has also completed studies in chelation therapy, nutrition, osteopathic manipulation, bio-identical hormone therapy, and prolotherapy.
