Do Bio-Identical Hormones Cause Breat Cancer?

One of the most frequently asked question I hear when starting a woman on bioidentical hormones is ‘ Will this cause me to get breast cancer?’ My answer is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with bio-identical hormones actually lessens once chance of getting breast cancer. That is because bio-identical hormones have the same molecular structure as those naturally produced by the human body, and are derived from plant sources like wild yams or soy.

What is crucial in prescribing these natural hormones is the balance between estrogen and progesterone. High levels of estrogen in relation to progesterone increases one’s risk of developing breast cancer. It is well know that most women are diagnosed with this cancer during perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause when progesterone levels drop causing an estrogen dominance. A study of over 1,000 women who were followed for 30 years found that those who were deficient in progesterone were 5.4 times more likely to develop premenopausal breast cancer. And it has been shown that women with the highest levels of progesterone had an 88% reduction in developing breast cancer. This is even if they have a history of breast cancer on both sides of the family. But not all progesterones are the same. The use of Progestin (a synthetic progesterone) is associated with a 40% increase in breast cancer when taken with estrogen. This synthetic progesterone should never be taken.

Then there is Dr. Haldeman. I have seen many acupuncturists over the years in Las Vegas and other cities, and while many have helped, none have compared to her. She is a bit more expensive than the average acupuncturist, but from my very first appointment, I understood why.

…but quickly realized my 3 year old daughter needed to be seen as well. Testing revealed my son had leaky gut and high levels of environmental toxins, heavy metals, and mold. My daughter’s results showed even higher levels of all three. For many patients, eczema isn’t just an annoyance—it’s a life-altering condition. Children scratching until they bleed, parents exhausted from sleepless nights, adults covering up their skin out of embarrassment. I’ve sat across from families who have “tried everything”: steroid creams, elimination diets, allergy medications, even powerful immune-suppressants.

And yet, the eczema persists.
These are the cases I see most often—patients who have been told there’s nothing left to try. But in my practice, I’ve found that stubborn, unrelenting eczema always has a deeper story.

The Gut–Skin Connection: The Root That’s Overlooked

Research now confirms what many of us in functional medicine have observed for years: the gut and skin are in constant communication. When the gut is inflamed or imbalanced, the skin almost always reflects it.

When most people think of chronic infections, they imagine “bad bugs” hiding in the body. What many don’t realize is that microbes have their own defense system called biofilms. These sticky, protective layers act like shields, making it harder for your immune system or even antibiotics to clear infections. One of the key building blocks in biofilms is fibrin, a protein that also plays a central role in blood clotting and cardiovascular health. This means that if your body makes too much fibrin, or struggles to break it down, you may be at higher risk for stubborn infections that don’t respond to treatment. Some of the most common place’s biofilm-driven infections show up are the sinuses, urinary tract, gut, and vaginal tract — spots where microbes can settle in and resist treatment.

Curcumin is one of the oldest, traditional spices. It is made up of three different curcuminoids that give curcumin its intense yellow color. Across Asia, people have consumed curcumin for thousands of years as a food product. It is also often used externally on wounds and for skin diseases.

Since 1949 when Nature published an article entitled “Antibacterial Action of curcumin…” conventional medicine has been intrigued with this substance. A myriad of scientific articles have been published attributing the anti-inflammatory properties to curcumin.
What Can Curcumin Treat?

Aside from treating inflammation it has been shown to be able to treat rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, cancer and dyslipidemia.

When it comes to cancer curcumin has been shown to block cell growth, trigger senescent cells to complete their cell cycle through all its phases, and triggers apoptosis resulting in cell death.

IV Curcumin for Cancer Treatment
Another area where I have found IV curcumin particularly useful in cancer treatment is its ability to quench the inflammatory process. This is important for several reasons. First, inflammation provides a fertile soil for cancer to grow and metastasize. Secondly, when a patient has high inflammatory markers (e.g. hs-CRP, sed rate, IL-6, fibrinogen and homocysteine) and is undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, their prognosis is less promising as these therapies promote inflammation.

Because the absorption through the intestines is only around 2-6%, intravenous curcumin allows an effective therapeutic level to be attained.

Our Story

Terry Pfau D.O., H.M.D. received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. His internship was completed the following year at Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center. He received his board certified in Neuromuscular Medicine in 2006.

While in medical school it was his 5-year-old daughter’s experience with psoriasis that sparked his interest in Alternative Medicine. In an attempt to help her, she was taken to several dermatologists who only prescribed stronger and stronger topical steroids.

Although the medication gave temporary relief, she could not be left on them indefinitely. On taking her off the medications the psoriasis would come back even worse. Out of desperation, she was taken to a physician in Kansas City who practiced homeopathy. Almost immediately she began to see improvement and within a month the skin lesion had cleared.

Over the last 32 years, Dr Pfau has sought out training from some of the best physicians in the alternative medical field. He is a graduate of the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy, the U.C.L.A Medical Acupuncture for Physicians Course, and Maharishi Ayurvedic Medicine Course for Physicians. He has also completed studies in chelation therapy, nutrition, osteopathic manipulation, bio-identical hormone therapy, and prolotherapy.
