Many view oncologists solely as purveyors of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. But most are truly concerned about their patient’s health. So when they heard of findings from a recent research showing that exercise can yield the same or better results than some of the current drugs it prompted a standing ovation.

Why exactly does exercise benefit cancer patients?

- It is most likely due to a combination of the following that contributes to a longer and healthier life.

-The higher muscle mass and lower fat mass leads to less inflammation which drives cancer growth.

-Exercising causes muscles to release chemokines that generate healing in the body.

-With exercise it is easier for insulin to bind to cells. When insulin is not able to bind it causes the body to make more which drives the growth of cancer.

-Myokines, which are protein released from muscles, have been shown to decrease the growth of prostate cancer cell lines.

-Exercise mobilize natural killer cells and T cells which are effective killers of caners. One study showed a 60% reduction in tumor growth.

-Exercise lowers the risk of stem cell activation which prevents recurrence of cancer.

Lately many people have been noticing a shift they can’t quite explain. There’s a restlessness, a stronger desire to make changes, and less willingness to ignore fatigue, anxiety, or feeling off.

In traditional Chinese medicine, cycles of time are believed to influence how energy moves through both nature and the body. In Five-Element philosophy, each year carries a distinct energetic pattern, and once every 60 years that pattern aligns as the Fire Horse. The Horse represents peak Yang — the energy of midsummer and the noon sun — associated with movement, expression, and bringing things into the open. It is also linked to the Heart system, which governs clarity of mind, emotional balance, and a sense of direction in life.

Refocussing on Health This Year

Instead, this year offers a useful opportunity to redirect that motivation toward healing. Supporting sleep quality, stable blood sugar, inflammation control, and nervous system regulation helps anchor the body, so the increased energy becomes productive rather than overwhelming. Consistent routines, morning light exposure, time outdoors, balanced meals, and calming the nervous system at night can significantly improve metabolic and hormonal function.

This is also a good time to look deeper at persistent symptoms rather than managing them alone. Chronic fatigue, difficulty losing weight, digestive issues, and anxiety often have identifiable physiologic contributors. When we address metabolism, nutrient status, and inflammatory patterns, people frequently feel more stable and energized without needing to push themselves.
The Fire Horse does not force change; it highlights where change is ready. Used well, this energy can help shift attention toward long-term health rather than short-term coping.

If you’ve been feeling a stronger motivation to improve your health, this may be a supportive time to act on it.

How GLP-1s Work
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is not a typical medication — it is a hormone. After we eat, the intestine releases GLP-1 to communicate with the brain and pancreas. It helps regulate appetite, slows stomach emptying, improves insulin signaling, stabilizes blood sugar after meals, and helps the brain recognize fullness. The important detail is that GLP-1 is a peptide, meaning it is a protein molecule.

What Happens When You Ingest a GLP-1 Pill

Your digestive system is specifically designed to break proteins apart. When a peptide is swallowed, stomach acid and digestive enzymes immediately dismantle it into individual amino acids. In other words, your body treats an oral GLP-1 the same way it treats dietary protein — it digests it. Most of the active medication is destroyed before it ever reaches the bloodstream.

Oral GLP-1 medications attempt to work around this problem using special absorption enhancers that temporarily alter the stomach lining so a small amount of the drug can pass through. However, only a tiny fraction is absorbed — often less than 1%. Because of this, dosing becomes highly sensitive to timing and stomach contents. Patients must take the medication on an empty stomach and avoid food or even water for a period of time, and even small variations can significantly reduce effectiveness.

Why Injecting GLP-1s Works Better

Injectable GLP-1 medications bypass the digestive tract entirely. When placed under the skin, the medication is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and maintains steady levels over many hours or even days. This produces more reliable appetite regulation, more consistent blood sugar control, and stronger signaling to the brain centers that regulate hunger and satiety.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective on breast health is logical and part of the cycle of life. The two organ systems that manifest in the breast are the liver and the stomach channels.

It is significant to consider that a stomach point is on the ni**le of the breast. As a nursing mother produces milk for her infant, the menstrual cycle ceases in order to use the energy of menstruation to promote lactation. Mother’s milk fills the stomach of the infant and promotes the vital health of this offspring.

What is going on in the health of the mother who struggles to nurse her child? Why is there so much breast cancer today? Chinese medicine purports an imbalance in the liver, stomach or the extraordinary vessel called the Chong Mai, or penetrating vessel. Could it be a problem with what the woman is eating, or the level of stress she is under? Possibly. What is known from a TCM viewpoint is that there are herbs and acupoints that can help promote breast health. Acupuncture point number ST-18 (Rugen) is located just beneath the breast below the ni**le line, approximately 4 inches from the midline of the chest. This point is indicated in breast pain or distention, abscess, and swelling. It can also help with breast milk production or regulation. Dandelion (pu gong ying) is a common herb used for breast detoxification. Men and women alike can suffer from breast health concerns.

A non-lactating woman was struggling with brown color breast excretion. She had seen many Western medicine doctors to seek help with concerns about her breast health. She became frustrated after the results of much testing came back benign and idiopathic. She visited us to see if Traditional Chinese Medicine could help her, and I assured her it could. After applying simple acupuncture treatment and adding Pu Gong Ying tea to her diet, her brown ni**le discharge was no longer an issue.

Acupuncture and herbal application can greatly promote peace of mind, and support the health of the body.

After the stress of the holidays and the rushed start to the new year, many people continue to experience bloating, reflux, constipation, fatigue, sugar cravings, or skin flares. These symptoms aren’t random—they’re signals that the gut may be driving ongoing inflammation.

~The Gut–Heart Connection

Your gut influences heart health by:
Regulating systemic inflammation
Supporting healthy cholesterol metabolism
Influencing blood sugar and insulin levels
Affecting nutrient absorption needed for vascular health.

An imbalanced gut microbiome can increase inflammatory markers that stress the cardiovascular system—even when traditional labs appear normal.

~Signs Your Gut May Need Support

Bloating or discomfort after meals
Irregular bowel movements
Food sensitivities
Acid reflux or indigestion
Fatigue or brain fog
Chronic inflammation or skin issues

These are not just digestive issues- they often reflect deeper systemic imbalance.

~A Gut Reset Is More Than a Cleanse

A functional gut reset focuses on:
Reducing inflammatory triggers
Supporting digestion and absorption
Rebalancing beneficial bacteria
Repairing the gut lining

When the gut is supported, inflammation often decreases, energy improves, and cardiovascular markers can shift in a positive direction.

-Why February Makes Sense

February is an ideal time to refocus on gut health because it:

Aligns with heart health awareness
Allows inflammation from the holidays to be addressed
Supports better energy, metabolism, and resilience moving into spring
Supporting your gut is not just about digestion—it’s about protecting your heart, immune system, and long-term health.

~The Takeaway

If you’re experiencing lingering symptoms despite “doing all the right things,” your gut may be the missing link. February is the perfect time to show your heart some love by starting where health truly begins: the gut.

Walking 7,000 steps seems to be a realistic number and is linked with a 25% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, a 37% lower risk of dying from cancer and a 38% lower risk of dementia. If you walk more, the benefits increase but at a smaller amount.

Even a small increase in steps per day was associated with lower health risks: 4,000 steps were linked to a 36% lower risk of death compared with 2,000 steps. Every step counts as even small changes in physical activity may boost overall health.

People are what they put into their body. One of the reasons kids in my elementary school picture were all thin is in part due to the absence of high fructose corn syrup in our diet. Fructrose constitutes more than 40% of sweeteners consumption in western countries. High fructose corn syrup consumption increased by more than 1,000% between 1970 and 1990. This past decade alone people have switched from eating 16-20 grams of fructose to 60-100 grams every day – a dramatic 500% increase.

The most common form of fructose that Americans consume today is high fructose corn syrup. Previously sugar beets and sugar cane was our main source of sugar. Food manufacturers have found that corn syrup provides not only better flavor and stability but also foods stay fresher longer and the texture and color is better. And more importantly it is cheaper.

Fructose has the highest sweetness among all natural sugars, with its sweetness being about 1.8 times that of sugar (beet or cane sugar). However, corn fructose has many negative impacts on our health.

Increased calorie intake: Corn fructose may stimulate appetite and promote overeating
Fat accumulation: Corn fructose can be more easily converted into fat in the liver and other tissues leading to weight gain and fatty liver.
Insulin resistance: Corn fructose consumption can impair insulin sensitivity, making it harder for the body to regulate blood sugar levels
Inflammation: Corn fructose can trigger inflammation in the body, which can contribute to weight gain and other metabolic disease.
Another characteristic of corn fructose is it is the only sweetener that does not require insulin to enter into cells. In other words it can go directly into your cells without any regulation from the body.
When it comes to cancer, studies suggest that cancers preferentially use high corn fructose as fuel to accelerate their growth. In fact epidemiological studies have revealed that cancer growth is fueled by high fructose corn syrup.
There is a subtle movement in the food industry to use less corn fructose. But it ultimately is up to people to decide what they eat.

For over 2,000 years Chinese acupuncturists have realized the importance of tongue diagnosis. Western medicine is finally catching up to the validity of this approach as was evidence in a recent article on tongue diagnosis in the Scientific American magazine (Nov 2025, 13). In this article they discussed how patients with low iron, diabetes, or fatty liver could be diagnosed through tongue body, color, and coating.

Patients can look at their tongue to find if there are any peeling or holes in the tongue coating (see image below) which would indicate that the stomach may be experiencing disharmony. However, if you have always had what is referred to as geographic tongue (see below) then it is uncommon to see this change with acupuncture.

Most people think of mold as a household nuisance, but for many cancer patients, it can quietly work against healing. Mold doesn’t just cause allergies — it releases toxins (called mycotoxins) that weaken the body in ways that directly affect cancer risk, cancer growth, and how well someone responds to treatment. This is why every cancer patient should be evaluated for mold exposure, even if they don’t think they’ve been exposed. Mold is incredibly common, often invisible, and its effects on the body can mirror or worsen cancer-related symptoms.
One of the biggest issues is that mold is a major immune disruptor, and cancer is a disease of immune surveillance. Your immune system is designed to recognize and eliminate abnormal cells before they become tumors — but mold toxins suppress and confuse that system. When the immune system is weakened or distracted, cancer has more room to grow.

Mold toxins also damage DNA and promote mutations, which is the earliest step in cancer development. These toxins create oxidative stress and inflammation that injure cells, making it easier for damaged cells to turn cancerous. For someone already fighting cancer, mold exposure can add additional stress to DNA repair systems that are already overwhelmed.

Another important link is detoxification. Mold impairs the liver and detox pathways that are crucial during cancer treatment.
Chemotherapy, radiation, and even natural therapies rely on a functioning detox system to clear cellular waste. If mold is blocking or slowing those pathways, treatments can feel harsher, side effects can worsen, and the body may have a harder time processing cancer-related toxins.

Our Story

Terry Pfau D.O., H.M.D. received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. His internship was completed the following year at Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center. He received his board certified in Neuromuscular Medicine in 2006.

While in medical school it was his 5-year-old daughter’s experience with psoriasis that sparked his interest in Alternative Medicine. In an attempt to help her, she was taken to several dermatologists who only prescribed stronger and stronger topical steroids.

Although the medication gave temporary relief, she could not be left on them indefinitely. On taking her off the medications the psoriasis would come back even worse. Out of desperation, she was taken to a physician in Kansas City who practiced homeopathy. Almost immediately she began to see improvement and within a month the skin lesion had cleared.

Over the last 32 years, Dr Pfau has sought out training from some of the best physicians in the alternative medical field. He is a graduate of the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy, the U.C.L.A Medical Acupuncture for Physicians Course, and Maharishi Ayurvedic Medicine Course for Physicians. He has also completed studies in chelation therapy, nutrition, osteopathic manipulation, bio-identical hormone therapy, and prolotherapy.
