This article perfectly highlights why so many trauma victims do not seek therapy! Thinking positive thoughts is not enough to fix the damage done by trauma and it certainly won’t prevent bad things from happening!

Nobody wants to be kicked when they are already down so naturally, we think that telling people uplifting mantras about positivity will give them the boost they need, but this is not always the case.

It has been nearly seven months and I barely get through a week without having a client or colleague tell me they know someone who was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival who continues to exhibit increasing trauma symptoms but still has not sought out counseling. Often the reason given is that they do not feel ready to talk about the incident. One of the key features of EMDR therapy is that it is highly effective at reducing symptoms without the need for a detailed discussion of the traumatic events.

Dr. Mate makes an excellent point about the connection to trauma and addiction. However, I think it is important to note that when people hear the word “trauma” they often picture things like combat, severe abuse, or terrorist attacks. In actuality things that may be considered very minor to adults can be perceived as extremely traumatic to children in different developmental stages, so an addict’s trauma history often consists of several less severe events that have left them with negative thoughts and emotions. Addictive substances and behaviors are appealing to people with these issues because they offer a temporary opportunity to feel good or even just to feel numb and have a break from their negative emotions.

My Practice

My name is Justine and I have ten years experience working in various areas of the counseling field. I chose the name for my private practice based on my belief in empowering my clients to adapt to the challenges they face so that they can thrive and become their best self. Often when an individual goes through traumatic experiences they develop long lasting negative symptoms and may incorporate destructive coping skills to deal with these symptoms. Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a quick and effective method of decreasing these negative symptoms and reducing the need to continue destructive coping skills. EMDR is useful in treating many issues including PTSD, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, trauma, poor stress tolerance, self esteem issues, anger, performance anxiety, eating problems, body image issues, poor impulse control, chronic pain, phobias, and social anxiety.
