September is also Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month - a proclamation made this year!
Ovarian cancer encompasses cancers of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the primary peritoneum, which is the tissue that lines the abdominal wall and covers the abdominal organs. Taken together, this group is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States.😔
These cancers often go undetected until they’ve reached advanced stages. When symptoms do appear, they tend to be associated with other conditions. These symptoms may include persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and frequent urination. Knowing the early signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer can lead to early diagnosis and life-saving treatment.
Screening for ovarian cancer is difficult, but pelvic imaging and blood tests are currently the best tests for diagnoses. Increasing age and a family history of the disease are the strongest risk factors.
Talk to your doctor about your risks and any symptoms you may be experiencing! 💚
