Reptile Awareness Day is a day to promote education, appreciation, and awareness about reptiles as pets and their roles in ecosystems. Although reptiles like snakes, lizards, and turtles are quite different from common pets like cats, there are interesting connections between the two. 😻

One notable relation is the behavior of cats hissing, which is believed to be an imitation of snakes. Both snakes and cats hiss as a defensive tactic to sound intimidating and ward off threats. 🐍

Historically, in ancient cultures such as Egypt, cats were revered for their ability to protect against snakes, symbolizing a natural predator-prey relationship and the protective role of cats against reptiles like snakes. 😻

Cats and many reptiles have vertically slit pupils. These help them to ambush predators for hunting and give an optical advantage. They have good light control which helps them create sharp contours. 🦎

World Rabies Day is September 28th. Rabies vaccination in cats is critically important for both their health and public safety, as rabies is fatal and can be transmitted to humans and other animals.

Even strictly indoor cats should get the rabies vaccine. Cats can escape outside or be exposed to rabid wildlife (like bats, raccoons, or rodents) indoors, making vaccination necessary for all cats.

Haylee is from Southern California and has been in the veterinary field for 2.5 years. Her favorite thing about working in vet med is meeting all the new kitties and continuing to learn new things about cat care. She has two cats named Topaz and Onyx.
Haylee enjoys traveling, cooking and binge watching tv shows.

Did you know that cats are experts at hiding pain? 😿 Because they’re natural masters of disguise, even loving pet parents may miss the subtle signs.

Some signs your cat may be uncomfortable include:
✔️ Changes in appetite
✔️ Sleeping more (or less) than usual
✔️ Avoiding favorite spots or activities
✔️ Grooming less—or overgrooming one area
✔️ Hiding or seeming unusually grumpy

Our feline friends deserve to live happy, comfortable lives. This month, we want to spread awareness: if you notice any of these changes, it may be time for a vet check. Early detection and treatment can make a world of difference.

Boarder of the Month: Ellie

Ellie is a spunky five month old kitten with a lot of personality. She loves to scratch the scratching post and play with all the toys. Ellie definitely keeps us on our toes 😉.

Meet the Staff: Dr. Heather Groghan

Dr. Groghan graduated from Ohio State University and has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 17 years. She loves being an advocate for her patients, since they aren't able to verbally explain to us what is wrong. She wants them all to live happy, healthy lives.

In her free time, Dr. Groghan enjoys embroidery, stained glass and learning how to make doll clothes from vintage patterns. She is seen here with Egon, Harrison, Indiana, Julian, Frankie and Henry Ford.

😺National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! 😻

The day is dedicated to encouraging cat owners to schedule annual or regular veterinary check-ups for their cats, to secure their kitty stays "purr-fectly" healthy.

Cats are often less likely than dogs to be taken to the vet, partly because they are skilled at hiding pain or illness, which means health problems often go unnoticed until they become serious.
