Knee pain can be a major roadblock in your daily life, but understanding the cause is the first step toward getting relief. Here are some of the most common culprits:
1. Arthritis: The most frequent cause of chronic knee pain, arthritis can take many forms, including osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear) and rheumatoid arthritis (an inflammatory disease). It causes the cartilage in your knee to wear down, leading to pain and stiffness.
2. Ligament Injuries: Sudden movements or sports-related trauma can lead to injuries of the ligaments that stabilize your knee, such as the ACL or MCL. These injuries often cause significant pain, swelling, and instability.
3. Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the knee, often caused by overuse from activities like running or jumping. This can cause a dull ache, especially when you are active.
4. Meniscus Tears: The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber in your knee. A tear can cause pain, swelling, and a feeling of your knee "locking" or giving way.
5. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: Also known as "runner's knee," this is pain around and behind your kneecap, often caused by repetitive stress or issues with how your kneecap tracks.
