Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that causes inflammation in the body. Visible signs of inflammation due to psoriasis, such as raised plaques and scales on the skin. (plaques may look different for different skin types).
With normal skin cells, they completely grow and shed in about a month. With psoriasis, skin cells do this in only three or four days. This occurs due to the overactive immune system which speeds up skin cell growth. Since the skin cell growth is expedited, the skin is not shedding. Instead the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin aka psoriasis which can itch, burn, and sting. Plaques and scales may appear on any part of the body, but they are commonly found on the
elbows, knees, and scalp.
