Spring Valley Hospital recently welcomed Universal Health Services, Inc. - UHS Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer Dr. Brenda Woodcock, who leads nursing practice and sets patient care standards, and UHS Vice President Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Rice, who ensures medical quality and fosters physician leadership at our hospital.

Executive visits allow leaders to see enterprise priorities in action, including visits to 3 West Orthopedic Surgical Unit, the Emergency Department and Telemetry Monitoring Unit. In our high-performing 3W Orthopedic Surgical unit, Dr. Brenda Woodcock, Dr. David Rice, VHS CMO Dr. Leslie Jacobs, Spring Valley Hospital CEO Claude Wise, and CNO Dr. Patience Walker watched RNs deliver bedside shift reports using IPASS. Consistent, structured communication, patient engagement, and clinical accountability show a strong culture of safety. Here, we integrate safety into daily practice rather than review it retrospectively.

In the Emergency Department, Nursing Director Carolyn Hafen’s team demonstrated the coordination, urgency, and decision-making required for complex care, as evidenced by efficient triage and timely intervention for high-acuity cases.

The visit to our Telemetry Monitoring unit had an equal impact. Continuous cardiac surveillance requires vigilance and rapid clinical judgment. Seamless escalation pathways also remain critical. Though we monitor behind screens rather than at the bedside, this work drives early intervention and ensures patient safety as a cornerstone of our care system.

Leaders observed alignment in all areas. Consistent standards, clear expectations, and shared ownership drive reliable performance at every level. We value our partnership and take pride in our team’s delivery of lasting results for patients and the community.

Meet the Team Monday!

We’d like to introduce James, RN Clinical Supervisor, Emergency Department. James began his Spring Valley Hospital career as an RN in the Medical Surgical division in 2016 and transferred to the ER a year later.

A clinical supervisor since 2021, James enjoys the variety of patients who seek care in our Emergency Department and says the most rewarding aspect of his work is “the moment you realize you have helped someone, really helped them.”

As a 10-year veteran nurse, his advice to other RNs applies to many other careers and industries: “Always be the calmest person in the room; being calm means you are in a better position to make the right choices and decisions.”

Thank you, James, for all you do to care for our patients and our community!

Congratulations to Ricky, EVS Porter, who recently received the STAR of the Month award! Nominated by his manager, she shares: This team member normally flies low, quietly, and sometimes unnoticed throughout the hospital performing one of the not-so-prestigious jobs but one of the most important jobs in the hospital, as a trash and linen porter.

He is reliable as our go-to porter for his extensive knowledge and skills, the ability to prioritize duties to get the job done and his effective communication before the end of shift for a seamless transition to the oncoming staff. Ricky is a great representation of all that Spring Valley is about – safe, compassionate, quality care!
